Update - I found Run Silent, Run Deep in the Walmart $5 bin as part of a movie 3-pack that includes the movies "Beachhead" with Tony Curtis and Frank Lovejoy, and "Beach Red", with Cornel Wilde and Rip Torn. Guess I know what I'll be watching tonight!

That Walmart $5 bin has some really good stuff, if you take the time to sift through it!

Guadalcanal Diary and, The Sands of Iwo Jima. Not quite sub movies...but many good ones have been mentioned.

If we're takin' Das Boat, the German version with subtitles is the way to watch that movie.

I've watched, and loved every movie listed. I'll give a few of my favs, and a couple haven't been mentioned yet

Battle of Brittan. - I'm an aviation nut and this one is a spitfire lovers dream. So good. As a kid those dogfight scenes were intense. The story was "ok" as far as that goes. It's mostly eye candy.

The Dirty Dozen - No explanation needed. One of the best of all time.

Enemy at the Gates ~ Man I love this one more that I can say. It's just a fantastic watch for me personally.

30 Seconds over Tokyo ~ What can I say I love planes

The Desert Fox ~ Rommel was a bad ass adversary.

Patton ~ Apparently, he read Rommel's book

I think the name of another flick is "The Enemy Below". A really good WWII sub movie.

And it was remade to one of the better Star Trek episodes, Balance of Terror

The Bedford incident- while admittedly a *cold war* movie- was great.

It was more intense for me then Dr Strangelove or Fail Safe. Perhaps because we don't know if WWIII started or not

That was a great war movie! It was my grandfather's favorite war movie.

Great discussion (to me). Thanks much. Yes to all these sub movies. Das Boot (German spelling). Hunt for Red October, Enemy Below, Gray Lady Down. Run Silent. More. Including River Kwai (which is hardly a submarine film, but what an entertaining war story! Holden is classic in this. So is Alec Guiness -- oops, I cited Ollvier temporarily by mistake). I've watched many of these films countless times on my iPod. I own every one mentioned, via iTunes or DVD.

If the movie scene isn't enough, read "Blind Man's Bluff." Has to be the best non-fiction read on submarine technology and history out there. I might read it again cuz of this thread.

Guys.........if we're going to get away from submarine movies, we have to mention The Great Escape. One of the truely great WWII movies...and with a fantastic cast. Steve McQueen alone put that one over the top.
