Run Silent, Run Deep

For the past couple of days now our local PBS station, WGBH in Boston, had been playing an old WW2 submarine action movie, Run Silent, Run Deep, starring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. I'd seen it before a long time ago, but it was worth watching again. A damn fine movie! Black and white, using miniatures for action shots (long before CGI graphics), with a gripping story line and superb acting by two Hollywood legends along with an excellent supporting cast. Even the area where the bulk of the movie occurs - the Bungo Straits between Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan - is fraught with peril! A great war movie from a time when they knew how to make them. Patriotic without being preachy, which is how I like my patriotism - silent and deep!

LOVE me some classic war filmage! Tora Tora Tora, 12 O'Clock High, The Great Escape, The Longest Day... these will be on semi-permanent rotation in the man-cave(no DVD player in there yet).

Those old B&W submarine movies are great, especially the ones that always seem to have Ronny Cox as a cowardly XO who falls to pieces and ends up getting killed.

Absolutely- although knowing the ending, or at least where old what's-his-name *gets it*- I can't stand this one.
The Sand Pebbles is also great.

I liked The Hunt for Red October, U-571, and Das Boot the best. Also K-19, Hostile Waters, and Kelsey Grammer's Down Periscope. Below was kind of a dump plot IMO.

And, while I'm thinking of it, "The Hunt For The Admiral Graf Spee" is a really good WWII naval movie.

I liked The Hunt for Red October, U-571, and Das Boot the best. Also K-19, Hostile Waters, and Kelsey Grammer's Down Periscope. Below was kind of a dump plot IMO.

Das Boot is an amazing movie. The sub captain does some great work in Beerfest as well.

I believe you're thinking of Gray Lady Down, although that was in color, IIRC.

I have to see RSRD again. Netflix, here I come.

Another WW2 sub classic. Robert Mitchum as the US destroyer commander vs. Curt Jurgens as the U-Boat commander. A very good movie indeed!

IIRC, one of the actors from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (a TV show set in a submarine) was in that one. Earlier in his career, of course.
