Running

Just out of curiosity, what kind of shoes are you guys wearing? I need some suggestions.

I'm running Nike Pegasus (24 or 25 i believe).

If you are uncertain about picking a shoe, find a local store that is either solely for runners or specializes in that. Those guys see way more feet than anyone and they generally know their stuff because they are almost certainly accomplished runners themselves.

I will say one thing; don't skimp on socks. Sounds ridiculous to drop 5-10 dollars on a single pair of socks, but your feet will thank you.

Update: Yesterday I ran 7.25 miles in about 76 minutes (10:50 pace). Definitely the farthest distance I've ran off of a treadmill. I had been trying to do the half-marathon in January, but now I truly think it'll be possible to run it. Probably have my weekly long run hover around 7-8 miles for all of May and possibly try to boost that to the 9-9.5 range in June.

Am I the only one carrying the torch?

I haven't ran in almost a month, finals took up all my time. I planned on running this weekend, but it rained the whole time. I'll be running lots this summer.

Same here. Once the end of the school year rolls around I really lose all my time to do anything but study and eat. I actually think I might switch over to swimming, though..

Swimming is amazing, but watch out, your nose might not be able to handle the chlorine, as mine wasn't. After about a week of doing it I would get a cold and have to stop for a few weeks.

I use to run 45 minutes a day, about 4 miles when my knee was good. This was directly after football season. Now that my knee is messed up, I have resorted to biking. I like it a lot, but I wish I had the money to buy a good bike.

I have read a few of those articles as well. I have considered getting a pair of those Vibrum Five Finger shoes and giving them a shot. I haven't come up with the money yet.

The Five Fingers are awesome. I haven't run in them yet, but I wear my Five Fingers KSOs for light hiking a good bit. Once you get past the goofy looks, they are amazingly comfortable. I think I've got about 30 miles in them off-road, and am hard-pressed to go back to my New Balance 1320s, which themselves are some of the best shoes I've ever worn. I think the best part of the KSOs is that you just throw them in the wash and they're fresh as new. :)

I just ran my first 5k of the year. Ran it in 31:19, slow, but I was doing it with my girlfriend and I was letting her set the pace. Heart rate while running was 134 bpm, so that was well within my target range. I hope to get down to the 25 minute mark.

Not bad. I`m currently averaging between 7:40 and 8:20 minute miles depending on the distance I`m running and how I pace myself. I really think some new shoes and running socks will really help cut off a few seconds too. The Nike`s I`m using just hurt way too much after a few miles.

I was averaging an 8 minute mile in the gym a few months ago, but the second half of the semester kicked my cardio in the sack and I didn't have time to run anymore. I was also running a 6 minute mile if I was just running one. My Saucony's are awesome shoes, check some out.

Bump for a great thread!

I finished my first sprint triathlon today, and Im hooked. Finished in 1:42, and places 2nd in my age group. I run, bike, or swim, every day, depending upon how Im feeling. I focus more on running and swimming though, as Im a natural biker. I seem to stay pretty quick on the bike, but lose my running and swimming legs quick.

I have another sprint coming up August 8th, and then focusing on my senior year of golf. After that, its hardcore training to run a half marathon, and hopefully the next level up triathlon.

Someday.. Ironman. :D

My weekly mileage is staying between 25-30 miles. I ran about ten miles last night but I didn't time it. Probably about 11:30-12:00 minute miles if I had to guess.

I did run a 5k at the end of a 7 mile run in about 26 minutes. In my eyes, that is a major improvement over my last 5k time (28:45). I think I could shave that down more if I knew a 5k was the distance of my run that day. Probably do a 5k and 10k to tune up the speed for my half-marathon in January. I'm shooting for 25 and 55 minutes respectively.

Since Easter weekend I haven't ran anywhere but outside. I can tell a difference. I'm not like some of these sprinters that I see yet, but my wheels are spinning a little faster now. Also, my Pegs are about toast after about a 1 year. I need to get some new shoes - preferably lighter, but I need a wide size and they are a little harder to find in stock.

I've been a bad boy and haven't kept up with my running. Instead I've been swimming and lifting - which is great mind you, but definitely isn't helping me work towards the half marathon I'm planning on doing this December.

Anyone have a weekly running schedule I can steal?

I really need to get back into running. I havent run in a year and a half and of course have packed on the freshman 15+. I'm currently 6'1 and somewhere around 210-215. Tomorrow afternoon I plan to break out the Brooks' and head out for a light run. Hopefully if I can even do 3 days a week MWF I can get back in shape a little. However, I long for the days of XC at this immediate moment and may try to get back into daily runnings. I never thought I'd say it, but I miss Speed Workout Thursdays.

Those five finger shoes are pretty cool. One of the guys I ran XC with used the Nike Free I think they were, the ones with the soles split up into a bunch of different squares. He swore by them other than his racing spikes. I'd like to try them, but I think it would be risking too much injury to try to re-start my running career on those risking injury and not being used to the roughness of the pavement around here. Maybe if I ever get back up into the 20-30+ mile per week range I'll give them a shot.

Cool thread!

I've been trying to be a better runner, haven't practiced enough though.

I've done a half marathon with absolutely no preparation, before that, the longest distance I had ever run was 5k. I do not recommend that approach! :)

In March/April I switched from running in Asics to Vibram Fivefingers KSO. It took a while to get used to them, but now I won't run in anything else!

Actually, on Sunday a week ago I decided to go for a roughly 8km+ jog and for some reason I decided to try out my Asics again.
Big mistake, I've been limping for a week and I'm finally a bit better now.

I will never again run in my Asics! :)

Interesting thread. Nothing will make you want to run like not being able to do it. I blew my posterior tibial tendon last year, and had to have major surgery back in Nov to correct. FDL tendon transfer, calcaneal osteotomy (that's when they cut your heel bone OFF and bolt it back on), gastroc resection--the works. Lots of drugs and crutches for two months. Just recently been able to run again, and man does it feel good. I didn't gain any weight (46 y.o., 5' 11", 170), but I'm still a long way from being back 100%. My limit is about 2 miles at a 10-minute pace right now, but I add a little every time I go out. I'm actually having more trouble with a chronic groin injury on the other side. :hmm:

Anyway, after all that, I'm just glad to be able to do any running at all.

well... its officially time to pull out the old HS run schedule. I'm signed up for a 5k at the end of August. my goal is to be able to run it in under 30 mins. I've done it before and I know I can do it again. I doubt for my first one I'll be back down under 25, but if I try I bet I can get there.

Nothing like actually having a goal to run to... I hope

I'm currently in the middle of week 5 of the Couch to 5K program, having never run seriously before. Its kicking my butt, but Im enjoying it. My wife and I are planning on running together for 30min/day on our beach vacation in August, and we might sign up for the Dogfish Head 5k in September.
