Running

I ran cross country and played rugby in high school so I've been running since I was 15. When I got to college, though, I started going in cycles of on and off running, with the last one being the end of April (although to be fair I DID injure my shoulder). Now that it's pretty much healed and the rugby season is going to start in a little over a month I need to start pounding pavement again.

I typically run 3 to 4 miles every other day with my best mile time being 6:20. Since you typically run about 2 miles during a rugby match this ensures that as a wing I have the speed I need along with the stamina to keep going for an hour and a half of running, sprinting, tackling, getting hit, and drinking afterward.

I have been running regulary since I was 14 (maybe 15) and now I'm 18 so that's 3-4 years. In the beginning of this summer I set a goal, 5 kilometres under 20 mins, and so far the record is 21:45, and that was at the end of June when I ran that one. Now it's been month and I have ran basically every other day from the end of April to this very day, so 3-4 times a week. I hope I'll break it during this summer, it's tough, but possible. Wish me luck.

Ran a 6 miles in 54 minutes. Not too far off of my goals for a 25 minute 5k and a 55 minute 10k.

Found a gnarly sliver of rock (about 1/2" and sharp/jagged) in the soles of my left shoe that I believe was causing me a little pain on the days after a run. Still need new shoes, but talking to a close friend has steered me away from going lighter. He basically said that light shoes are really only a good idea for speed and short runs. Longer runs still require the cushioning (weight) of the heavier shoe.

Good luck. That is hella fast.

I use to be able to do that back when I was playing competitive soccer... Nowadays, not so much. I'm still having problems breaking 7:30 miles with my distance running :hmm:

Well, I've seen guy who is a year younger than I am, run 4,5 km, cross country, 16:50. :eyebrow:

He is in the same school, were kinda like half-buddies.

That's definitely doable. I was able to do a 5.40 mile back in high school, but again, I was doing competitive soccer and I was able to sprint most of it without even thinking. I can't even come close to that anymore; although these days I am focusing almost completely on distance>speed :hmm:

In other news, I'm loving my Mizuno Wave Riders!

Definitely doable. After all the world record of 5km is 12:57, if I remember it correctly. :D

I'm in - I'm training for a half marathon in September and a full marathon in November (Philadelphia). I've been slacking a lot this summer, in favor of lifting (my back squat is now at 265x5 & my deadlift is 365x5). I am planning on going for a new 5 rep max today for the squat. My goals are a sub 2hr half and a sub 4hr full. We'll see.

Breathing - get it any way you can, through your nose or mouth. If you watch a clip of elite runners, they are mouth breathing (not as much as me, that's for sure!). Beyond a certain pace threshold, you simply have to use the mouth.

Shoes - I'm using Vibram Five Finger KSOs. If you wear these, WEAR SOCKS!! Blisters are no fun & can sap the energy out of an otherwise good race. I also squat, deadlift, and press in them. Best shoes ever. I enjoy running in these much more than in my Brooks motion control shoes.

My best times thus far:
5K: 22:25
10mi: 81:37
400m: 1:13
5mi: 39:05 (over some serious hills)

Some good running sites:
Invalid Link Removed - he's got a calculator that shows predicted pace based from a single race time (i.e., put in your 5K time, see what the half time should be if appropriately trained.)
www.runnersworld.com - great info here, also on the forums

Thats all I can think of right now.

Runner's world has a lot of good info. I used to subscribe, but I got sick of their insulting marketing and resubscription schemes. Check out their web site for free info.

Another great resource is mapmyrun.com

I got back into running recently, and combine with a change in diet, lost 35lbs. in 11 weeks. I set my goal at 20 miles a week, and focused myself on losing weight 24/7. I made some big changes that weren't really so hard. In the morning I ate a big breakfast instead of nothing. I stopped putting sugar in my coffee and eating white bread and drinking pop. I made dinner smaller and stopped eating before bed. All of a sudden, I was dropping 5 lbs. a week.

My longest run yet was 13.5 around town, but I stick to 10-12 mile runs on the weekend and a couple 6 milers during the week. The change is incredible. I wasn't this fit in high school.

Just logged a 13 mile run Tuesday morning. Went for a about a 12 minute pace as a precaution. Took a walking break after about 12 miles and ended up walking probably a 1/2 mile. I took a gel, but next time I'm going to take another because I started to crash late in the run.

End with a 13 minute pace. I was originally shooting for a 2 hrs 15 min half marathon in January, but I appear to be pretty far out from that currently.

We'll see how the coming months affect my running. Hopefully the cooler weather will be a slight benefit as both of my shoes were nearly soaking wet from sweat after that run.

Also, I been doing yoga 2-3 times a week for the last few weeks and I can definitely feel that the extra stretching and slightly better flexibility during my runs. I finally broke 200 on the scale have been being a little more strict in my diet. Still hoping to be in 185-190 range come January 8.

Went for a 5.1 mile run the other day in my Vibram shoes, it was the longest distance I've run in them at a time.
It was over mixed terrain, pavement, dirt roads, fine gravel and rough gravel. It was very good and my feet didn't hurt at all.

The run over the gravel was a comfortable massage for me feet! :)

After this, I'm fairly certain I can run much greater lengths in the Vibrams without any discomfort.

Just started running as a way of quitting smoking and getting into shape. I ran 1 mile and was ready to die, but I made it without stopping. It sucks trying to run when you're out of shape and a smoker.

I'm a smoker and I've been walking for an hour every night.
(I take a stop on halfway, have a cup of coffee and smoke a cigar though)
It helped me a lot,but I feel like having a heart attack even when I think of running. If I start running,I'll make sure to have some paramedics are running with me too.:p
