Road running is 2x more difficult
Really? Even when on a constant incline on the mill compared to relatively flat streets?

4. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
Gotta breath all with my mouth. But I getcha, I'll try and be more concious about my breathing rhythm.Really? Even when on a constant incline on the mill compared to relatively flat streets?
Not sure if I'm that authority on the sport you want but;
1. Time breathing with your stride. Breathe out with your left foot strike every other strike.
2. Run properly. The heel is complelely unnessesary for anything other than standing. Landing on the mid foot or ball will give you much better shock absorption.
3. I don't start that fast. I have a small bone spur in my heel that is a little uncomfortable until it gets stretched with a light jog to start. Once everything feels loose then I pick it up.
4. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, this along with the breathing with your stride will help you regulate your breathing. Your legs should go before your lungs. If they aren't you might need to slow down and work up to it.
As someone who ran 5-6 miles every day in highschool and 3-4 times a week when college allows right now, I agree with all of that except the form part. I was coached and have always ran so that I make almost no noise when I run. I land on my heel, roll through the mid to the ball of my foot and lift off (this is for long distance running). The rationale is that slapping your foot down is unnecessary and wasted energy in your stride - it should be fluid to reduce impacts and keep your energy going forward.
Running on the balls of your feet is called sprinting![]()

Running sucks. My knees hurt after the first mile and for a week after. I need to stick to riding my bike and swimming.

There are two schools of thought on this. Watch a lot of the African distance runners and you will see that they all run without using the heel of the foot. While most in North America and Europe run with the heel. Both ways are equally valid.
Also, running on a tread mill is way easier. Think about it, it doesn't take as much energy to push off with, because the track is giving you some momentum in your stride. I can run a 6 minute mile on a tread mill, but I can't outside.

Interesting, I'll check that out. I've never been hardcore enough to watch the way other people run![]()
I have read a few of those articles as well. I have considered getting a pair of those Vibrum Five Finger shoes and giving them a shot. I haven't come up with the money yet. There was a really good book that came out called Born to Run that touched on this very subject.
It basically refuted just about every advance in running shoe technology by saying that despite pronation, supination, high arch, etc whatever technology, that the number of injuries is remained the same.
It was very-pro barefoot running, but a very interesting look at re-thinking one's stride. It claimed that running barefoot, while initially uncomfortable, doesn't mask the bodies pain impulses and requires striking on the forefoot to not have longlasting joint/tendon pain. Whereas the extra cushioning/technological advances on modern shoes numb the senses and allow detrimental wear and tear happen while being less noticeable.
Did it make me want to throw my shoes away, no. But it was an interesting look at multibillion dollar business (shoes) that despite increased cost and supposed function doesn't do the one the one thing that it should; decrease the number of injuries sustained using the product.
I`d agree and disagree. I find that the tread is actually more difficult, but that`s only because it`s so boring to run in place for more than 20 minutes![]()

Just out of curiosity, what kind of shoes are you guys wearing? I need some suggestions.
