Rush.

Better songs
Better Drummer
Better Bass Player
Better Vocalist
and the guitarist plays with more style.

JP's playing is incredible, but I think it lacks something.

Although I would say that Dream Theater's keyboard player is better than Rush's - if we're strictly talking keys.... but he doesn't play bass, play keys, and sing at the same time.

don't get me wrong, I love DT, but Rush would win out, in that competition every time.

DT and Rush can almost NOT be compared. They are not in the same league. As a previous poster noted, Rush may have been a great influence, but DT definitely is a great band in their own right. Both bands are very talented, but I never could stand Geddy Lee's vocals. Although I must admit, James LaBrie's voice used to be better as well.

DT has my vote because I have seen them live and they perform like nobody's business.

All in IMHO.

I've seen both live, and both are my top two favorite bands. Both have amazing skills, live performances, and compositions. If they were both instrumental-only bands, I would call it a tie. But, Rush comes out on top because Neil's lyrics are much, much better than any of DT's. Portnoy's lyrics are atrocious, Petrucci's are hit and miss, LaBrie's are okay, Myung's are decent, and Kevin Moore was the best of the bunch, but he exited much too early. However, I have yet to hear a badly written song by Neil.

I have been a huge Rush fan since I met them in the 70's, but I voted carrots just to be fair-
Younger guys can run faster, play faster and harder, do all kinds of tricks and technique better- but what Rush has accomplished goes beyond all that, which is why I still love 'em even if my favorite stuff is Hemispheres, Permanant Waves and Moving Pictures. Dream Theater is awesome but they haven't made history (yet), I feel Rush has.
