Rush or Dream Theater

I have to go with Dream Theater. If it weren't for John Myung, I'd have never made the switch to 6-string bass, and made so much progress in only 4 years of bass playing. He is the most inspiring, unique, and interesting bassist I've ever seen. His technique and style astound me every time.

Don't get me wrong, I love Rush as well. They are great musicians as well, and I totally look up to all 3 of them and draw influence from each. But Dream Theater... They are just musical masters in my mind. There's no band I appreciate more.

I would agree with you to an extent, Valerus. I did find Systematic Chaos didn't exctly meet my expectations. Not very high on my list at all, though.

However, I really enjoy all albums prior to that; everything up until SC is great, I think. I do really like Black Clouds and Silver Linings also. Many note that on BC&SL that Myung is put a bit quieter in the mix, but I still really enjoy the songs. I think it's a strong album, and its a nice relief after hearing SC. I don't find it bland, but maybe that's just me (but then again, what do I know, my favorite album is FII :D).

I gotta admit, I'm a fan of both bands, I think they are both amazing in their own way, but I had to give the nod to Rush. Reason: Songwriting. Rush songs are more firmly centered on mainstream classic rock themes, and they kind of set the standard (along with The Who and Pink Floyd) for the theme-based rock opera format. Dream Theater features amazing musicians who could probably win a technical shootout with Rush in most people's minds, but the songs are not quite as solid, a bit more rambling and nebulous.

Just my .02 cents.

I am a big fan of both. I've seen Rush 4 times, front row in front of Geddy. I saw DT over the summer. I started as a Rush fan, and later got into DT. Geddy Lee is the reason I play the bass and why I pushed myself to play at that level. DT in my mind is Rush generation 2. They both are amazing bands. Rush tho as great as they are more easy to get into if you are not a musician. Wheres DT is majorly a musicians band. I chose Rush just for the sake of its Rush and they nearly edge DT out of the favorite band title.

IMHO the two bands could not be any different, Rush plays with conviction based on thier self-learned theory.. as opposed to DT that seems to follow a learned thoery that sounds good but delivered with little emotion or soul... like compairing David Gilmour to Yngwie Malmsteen... I will take soul ANYDAY... Hell, even Slayer plays with the ferocity of the song FOR the song.
