I'm a very big fan of both bands.....have never seen Rush live, but I have seen DT live 3 times. I'm going to have to go with DT on this. Their songs are more advanced, both musically and by technique. I'm not just talking about the bass playing.

agreed. They just dont have that pulse that everyone expects music to have (that thing that lets you participate, which everyone for some reason calls soul...)

Either way DT is more fun to Listen to, not to participate to.

I think they are approximate iterations of each other separated by a few generations. Technically both are excellent. Lyrically they both have some out of the box content. And, to me, they both have seriously irritating singers :) I love both bands but they grate after a while. I just caught Rush at Red Rock this summer .. I can't think of a better place to see them .. it was transcendent.

For length of time alone Rush gets my nod but really it's 1. 1a.

I would LOVE Dream Theater if their singer would shut up. "Dark Eternal Night"? I have never met anyone who was like, "Oh, the vocals on this track are sweet." They're always like, "This song is sick until the singing starts then it blows some massive cock."

Also, Mike Portnoy does not use the double kick NEARLY as much as a metal band should. :ninja:

Since I am not a metal man, I vote for Rush. The bassline on Fly By Night inspired me to play bass. I'm not sure why. I also like Geddy's voice.
