Rush: The complete scores

I receive my book the other week. Very disappointed on how the bass lines were written out. I have no issues dealing with repeats, D.S., D.S. al Coda, but trying to flip back pages to find "Bass Riff 1" then flipping forward who knows how many pages to get caught up and then flip back for "Bass Riff 2", sorry this is unacceptable considering the price paid. Continue to write out the music as played so we can follow along with the music.

@Jeff Schofield, could this issue be addressed in the next print run? Or was this done to save space?

Hmm, 40 songs out of Rush's entire catalog. Maybe I wouldn't have called this "The Complete Scores"?

Lol! It looks as though they covered the decades pretty well, along with a nod to their tenure.

Animate * Anthem * Bastille Day * The Big Money * Caravan * Circumstances * Closer to the Heart * Distant Early Warning * Driven * Entre Nous * A Farewell to Kings * Fly by Night * Force Ten * Freewill * The Garden * Jacob's Ladder * La Villa Strangiato * Lakeside Park * Leave That Thing Alone * Limelight * The Main Monkey Business * Malignant Narcissism * Natural Science * New World Man * One Little Victory * A Passage to Bangkok * Presto * Red Barchetta * Show Don't Tell * The Spirit of Radio * Subdivisions * Test for Echo * Time Stand Still * Tom Sawyer * The Trees * 2112-I Overture * 2112-II the Temples of Syrinx * Where's My Thing * Working Man * Xanadu * YYZ.

A lot of commonly covered tunes, and just as many 'rare' songs. No doubt some overtime went into a project of this magnitude!

I was making a small joke, as compared to The Beatles Complete Scores, which actually contains all of their songs. Maybe I should have added a smiley face.

Huge Rush fan, I have a few Rush books already with some of these songs. And of course, GED’s BBBofB.

Ditto... since 10th grade. Regarding the books, I think I started on Journey, Styx, etc. mainly because I couldn't hear their bass lines as well.

I couldn't find any RUSH books at the time*, so I'd run their albums to death on Mom's console, slowing down the more difficult parts... and transposing, once I was close. IIRC, slowing down the console would essentially detune a half step.

It kept me off the streets.

The BBBoB! I still haven't finished it! Lol! I think I'm in the Hofner section.

* I still use tabs/notation to get up to speed on certain songs, but my ear has the final say as to what I play. That, I do listen to.

When I do see an accurate tab/notation, I try to credit the transcriber as much as I can. I know a lot of work has gone into it, to get it right.

It goes the other way, too... we've all seen those where we ask, 'What were you thinking?'

Hey just wanted to check if anyone has continued to use this book for Rush transcriptions? I've been going through a few songs here and there, leaving it for a bit, and then coming back after some time. Recently started to go through Closer To The Heart to finally get through the whole song.

I've found it mostly to be great, there are a few bars that I feel are slightly different when I listen to the track off the album and isolate the bass, but it is a note here or there. Sometimes i'll compare it to other Rush TAB books I have around, and mix that bar with what I think sound more correct. It really is a note here or there, or a bar here or there.

So I was just wondering, if you are using the Complete Scores, are you focusing on the Notation, the TAB or both? I do wonder, how specific authors are in general when formulating the TAB. I know I e-mailed with one author of a specific artist that released a book of his music and asked that question, he was kind enough to e-mail back and told me that he submitted the notation to the publisher and they used software to generate the TAB so it would reach the widest audience (More people seem to use TAB than notation), and he tweaked that TAB to make it better and more playable, but to focus on the notation primarily as that is what he does and what he submitted as accurate.

As someone that is newer to Rush, never saw them live (they never came to Australia) so can only use online video sources and their published live shows i've purchased on DVD/Bluray, I've been trying to watch where Geddy plays some of his songs to see how accurate some things are, but there are sections that you never see Geddy front on to really determine what is going on (checking multiple sources) ... so I was wondering, anyone here checked the TABs, agree with them as that is how / where Geddy plays that bit on the fretboard? Are you focusing on the notation more? Do you trust the TAB to be really accurate in how Geddy plays, or do you ignore them all together?

I do not place my trust in the tab. It is essential for me to read the notes and determine my preferred positions on the neck. Furthermore, one should always play in a manner that feels logical to oneself, rather than adhering to the instructions of the tab's author.
