Rush vs Yes

I was listening to Yes Union the other day. The song playing was "Heart of the Sunrise". So my wife (who is a retired musician) asks me "Is that Rush?" She thought the bass playing sounded like Geddy and the complex song structure sounded like Rush.

She likes bass players ... Good for me because I am one. But she also thinks Geddy Lee and Chris Squire are both very good bass players.

Rush did some covers a while back ... wouldn't it be cool if they covered a Yes song?

but that could be difficult for Geddy on vocals ... and the keys would have to be midi ...

While I'm a fan of both bands and both players, I've always considered Rush to be more of a "hard rock" genre of music...IMHO Yes' music is much more diverse...

Umm, I like Yes better than Rush if that is your question. Chris and Geddy have similar fretting styles but completely different picking/finger style. Chris uses a pick with slight pinch harmonics and Geddy uses his nails (eew.) And Yes is a lot more of a jam band than Rush.

Rush only has 3 members, Yes has five.

To be a fair fight, Rush would have to be given better weapons.

I think most of the similarity between the two bands is the bass sound, especially since both players have played Rickenbackers, and tend to lean towards a distorted, growly tone.

i love both bands, but think that between the 2 Yes was way more "out there", and Rush was/is more "friendly" or closer to straight out rock

it's like Yes is Progressive with Rock leanings and Rush is Rock with Progressive leanings...

and as far as vocals go, Jon Andersons were waaayyy more annoying to me than Geddys', but I still like both. i quickly got over the "annoyance factor...mostly cause i barely listen to the words in most songs anyways. I have albums that I have had for 20 years that I can play on bass and drums backwards and forwards...but could not tell you more than 3 words of the lyrics

Both great, but Yes can get a little too odd for me at times. Then again, Rush is not without their flaws, some of their heavily synthesized 80s era stuff was not to my personal liking. Luckily we have both.

It would be cool for Rush to cover a Yes song. They should have done one for Feedback...Heart of the Sunrise would have been cool. I like them both but Im a much bigger Rush fan. Oh and my favorite color is blue and any of you that disagrees...youre wrong!!

Sigh........wish I could find a wife like yours. You are a lucky man.

Rush was clearly influenced by Yes, but Rush is more accessible. I think it's natural to like the music of both.

I am a much bigger Rush fan than a Yes fan, but like them both. Geddy has acknowledged that Yes was an influence on Rush's music. I think this clearly comes across in many early albums. However, Rush did take things in a much harder rock direction.

While Chris and Geddy have different bass string techniques (picking vs. finger style), I think the flowing/melodic approach to bass lines are similar in a lot of ways. It doesn't surprise me if people occasionally confuse one for the other.

Jam Band? The only thing Yes has in common with Jam bands is that for many fans, the musical experience is enhanced by psychedelic drugs.
