I'd have to vote for Rush over Yes. If only because during the 80's when both bands kinda crapped out Rush didn't do it quite as badly, imo.

So I heard that Rickenbacker discontinued building 5-strings. If so, do you know why they decided to stop making them, and as a 5-string loving Rick junkie, what in G-d's name are you going to do about this? It doesn't appear to be that great of a situation for you....
I have tremendous respect for both bands, but I would have to go with YES, only because of my personal preference. It has nothing to do with "who's better". But I gotta re-evaluate my understanding of the definition of a "Jam Band" if YES is considered to be among them.
Ric5 (who started this thread) does conversions of 4003 (and other basses) from 4 to 5 string. His prices are very reasonable and is work is top notch. Here is the one he did for me, I love this bass:

I can listen to Yes for longer periods than I can Rush. It's easy for me to listen to an entire Yes album but I have to listen to Rush in doses of songs. And I find it very interesting that Chris S is a self taught, unschooled player. Recent interview with him revealed that info. I'd say he's done a right proper job of elevating his musical skills to that of the rest of the band.

I am a HUGE Yes fan, but listening to some of their weirder and more self indulgent stuff like Tales From Topographical Oceans in its entirety.... Well it gets me reaching for a pencil to drive through my eardrums!
Double album/CD with 4 songs. To cut and paste..... It is based on the Shastric scriptures, as found in a footnote within Paramahansa Yogananda's book Autobiography of a Yogi. Wanna punish your kids? Take away Internet access and IM and make them listen to this a few times.Rush on the other hand are generally approachable musically IMO. Geddy's voice may not be for everyone and Peart's lyrics can be downright laughable, but they are a rockin band and great live.
As a disclaimer, I have seen Rush on almost every tour since 1981 and Yes 5-6 times. I love both bands.
P.s. Clockwork Angels IMO is excellent. First CD that I can listen in its entirety frm Rush in decades.
Ugh, this kind of comparison is silly. Yes are not even the same band they were 10 years ago, let alone 35 years ago.
Rush has had the same lineup for 38 years. There is no reasonable comparison.
And for anyone who is confused, I'm not making a value judgment. I have seen Yes four times in concert, and Rush five times -- I'm a big fan of both bands. Why the **** does everything have to be vs.? Who gives a ****?
I swear one of the reasons I rarely visit TB anymore is because 80% of the threads seem to consist of dick-measuring.

I love both bands. I have listened to them a long time. I must say that Yes have better skills in terms of songwriting. Rush plays their songs with a different approach which I like very much.
I also like Chris Squire's bass sound better.

That is what I was getting at ... I like listening to the bass player in both bands ... both bass players have a distinctive trebley style.

Actually I am quite knowledgeable on that topic ...
Rickenbacker started making 5 string basses in the 80s. The 4003s5 was pretty much Rickenbacker putting 5 strings on a 4 string bass. I have owned several 4003s5 basses. They are wonderful ... except the string spacing at the bridge is about 2 1/8" ... that makes fingerstyle playing cumbersome. They discontinued the 4003s5 in the early 2000s.

About that same time Rickenbacker came out with the 4004cii5 bass. This bass was a proper 5 string bass with a wide neck. But it had pickups that had 2 1/4" steel rails. If you do the math then you realize you have a string spacing of 2 3/4" to 3" and pickup that can only handle about 2 1/8" ... Bummer.
