Rush YYZ song

Tupac said:
Anyone else find it impossible to dig in with this song? So much raking, I have no idea how Geddy gets that sound with it. I can only pull it off my gentle tickling the strings, I can't dig when raking.

I find it relatively easy to dig in. I alternate fingers during the main lick instead of raking.

I slowed this down intensively to learn it about six months ago. It's very funny actually to listen to it at half speed, you can hear that Geddy is really on the beat and playing clean, Alex is super sloppy (relatively speaking that is, meaning no disrespect!)
That probably has a lot to do with why they play it a bit slower these days.
Lord knows I'd be playing it at about 60% speed if I had to sit in!

it's a song I guage how rusty I've become by...

IMO there are tougher songs out there, try "gettin betta" by pat travers.....I had a tryout for a lynyrd skynrd tribute a while back and had to learn some songs and was floored at how rif oriented they really were, especially "I ain't the one"

they're fun as hell to play

I have played YYZ and I think I got most of it. I haven't played it in a while, though. La Villa Strangiato's solo bits, I just can't play those.. :( The band I'm in right now wants to play a lot of Rush, and they tried and tried to get me to play LaVilla, but there's no way I'll fake it (as they suggested) -- if you are in a Rush tribute, you need to play it spot on.

Thing is, we're not really a Rush tribute, either. I love Rush, but I also like it when people stay to listen. There's no way the casual listener wants to sit through LVS.

We're already pushing it doing Xanadu..

I remember talking to someone on MSN or something once, wh basically said "Now that I know how to play YYZ, I could play every other Rush song."

HAH! YYZ is challenging, but there are other Rush basslines that are harder than it (Hemispheres, I think, takes the cake.) I couldn't believe that that guy said that (whoever he was...) Not only that, but Geddy playing it in '81, vs '12 is almost totally different beast. :)

It's challenging at first, but it's always a fun song to play and bounce around with on the bass :)
