Yesterday I put the brass plates back and soon will post finished pictures, I am happy with the results but it was not so straightforward... I am planning to re-use the strings so that will be interesting.

To answer your question, no, the soundpost is still in place, and I am working hard, (or actually softly) to keep it there by using sturdy padded supports, keeping the bass horizontal, and not moving it around too much.

UPDATE:
Thanks to the Easter holidays, I was able to finish this restoration project successfully!
In the end, I did have to invest some time in trying to get rid of the rust on the plates, without removing the worms and the results are not perfect but acceptable. It involved trying homemade tips and tricks for rust removal on brass, and a lot of polishing using my Dremel tool and Brasso.

Importantly, the rust on the worms was completely removed, and the soundpost remained in place. I also now know how to string an upright bass, in this case with re-used strings, and, the instrument stays in tune!

My next project will be to repaint the Tailpiece, but for now, it is back to playing, playing, playing!

Wow! that looks great! FWIW I never use a liquid lubricant on tuning gears as oils or grease will tend to collect dust , dirt and grit that will then grind away at the gears. I use graphite (pencil lead) or a spray on silicone lub. that dries if I have the gears off of the bass.

Thanks BPM, I will keep an eye on dirt build-up. I may start a new thread here with a rattling noise coming from the body that I am still trying to resolve. Maybe I get some tips on that as well.
