Rusty Box "opinions"

So I just got out of the church service we played, it was my first time using the RB "live" and I was so happy with my sound! I really love the little box o' joy!

But I do have some questions...
During sound check, I connected my pedal board to the effects loop of the ampeg BA300 that I was using (bypassing its preamp correct?)
While I did like the tone, I decided to try pluging the pedalboard directly into the amp's input...
Now I loved the tone! of course, I fiddled around with the amps EQ a bit but I felt that it gave my tone a more "full" sound..

I know that plugging the bass straight to the same amp I can get a nice tone. so my question is, am I not using the RB to its fullest by using it in conjunction with an amp's preamp? I feel a bit bad that I wasn't able to get a full sound with the RB as the only preamp and using it just as another pedal :hmm:

do you fellow RB users bypass an amp's pre amp or use a power amp and happier with that tone?

I hope this doesn't make me look like a silly goose by asking these questions, but....

Not to hijack your thread or nothin', but what's everyone's opinion on the RB compared to the B3K? I'm in the market for a new OD with a warm tone. I'm one of the select few who thought the B3K was alright and I've been looking into the Rusty. Has anyone owned both and if so, what's the take on each pedal?

I have both RB and B3K and when I pick up my new Genz Benz Shuttle I'll compare them as "make-me-sound-like-tubes" pedals. I will also try RB in straight into input of amp and in return on effects loop to find which way I like it better.

I had both and A/B'd them. Basically I felt the B3K was a great distortion effect for occasional use, and the RB was a great dirty amp tone for always-on use. The B3K didn't quite satisfy me at the less-distorted range of the effect; and the RB had such high output that it was not so easy to bypass at unity gain.

This is what I'm looking for, thanks. I agree the B3K has an awesome distorted tone, but IMO it would sound like a mess in a prolonged live setting; recording with it would be killer stuff though. I'm wanting an authentic, slightly overdriven, warm tube tone with some bark that I can achieve without cranking my amp too loud. Basically something for smallish gigs, practices, and such. It seems like the RB might be what I'm after...

I felt this was the right way of looking at it, but for some reason, I felt compelled to share my unease on TB :o

I think I'm becoming to accustomed to reading others opinions.
or perhaps I've become a TB addict sheep of a man :help:

in any case, thanks bongo, I feel more at ease hearing that from someone else...

Playing live is where I like the B3K best. It works well in my bands mix. (drums guitar keys)

It sounds good (IMO/IME) through my rig which is solid state and I play a passive bass ..etc.etc.

I know that Rusty Box is based on solid-state Traynor but I heard lots of people using words "tube-like" to describe its sound.
Anyway, I found that my setup sounds the best when signal goes from RB to input of my amp. And I don't know how to compare B3K and RB - I prefer Darkglass as overdrive but I still use RB as my always on pedal.

I guess I'll keep using the input on the amp. it seems the added eq controls help me dial in a tone I like. I had thought about getting a eq pedal but I don't want to use up space on the pedal board like that just yet! ( trying NOT to go bigger than a PT mini).
