Ryknow, Mudvayne's bassist

How do you rate Ryknows playing?

Yeah, it was a different bassist in their first album. It was some scraggly looking older guy, ive seen pictures at a Mudvayne Fan site from their early years. I gave him a 1, he seems to like to lead in the songs and I like that he isn't just backing up the guitar like the other bands.

I think Ryknow kicks ass. He could play any style quite easily, as is shown by his use of numerous techniques.

As for the makeup thing, he changes it for nearly every show, so he's not like Kiss at all. He strikes me of being more Wes Borland-ish when it comes to the makeup thing - whatever suits the show. Even if I don't like Limp Bizkit.

Rex is very good. Not the best, but awesome nontheless. FBD is perhaps one of the better albums, but The Great Southern Trendkill is a lot more melodic and experimental, also good.

If you can't hear the bass in the songs, you must just have a bad ear. Hell, Rex follows the solo that ends Great Southern Trendkill, and it's audible.

To the person that said if Ryknow couldnt play jazz, or something to that effect, Listen to a song called Nothing to Gein. The part where it gets less metal, that is about as far away from metal as you can get. I give Ryknow a 1 because ive seen them live and he is amazing!!!!

Concur. And as for judging a book by it's cover...

If Wyno was overweight, had a club foot, or was just plain ugly, it would be wrong to judge him based on that.

But if he's going to go to all the trouble of distracting me from his music by dressing up like a dork, I will oblige him by ignoring his music and thinking he's a dork.

Well, it does really come down to whether you think he looks like a dork. I think that he looks cool, and that each of the bands makeup seems to reflect their onstage personality. And I'd never seen any pictures of Mudvayne before I heard Nothing To Gein, so does that mean as soon as I see a picture of them I should stop being interested in that band? No, I saw the makeup, and it didn't bother me. I did the same thing with Slipknot. Two things bothered me about Mudvayne:

1) Their incredible talent on their respective instruments. Chad is an awesome singer, Spag can throw out odd times like you wouldn't believe, Gurrg is experimental and adds texture, and he's not overpowering in the mix, and Ryknow is well documented for his technical ability, even if you don't care for the music.

2) The live show. Full of energy, almost studio quality. This enhances their instrument skill for me, the ability to put on an awesome show while playing such complicated music...mind-boggling.

These two things make me feel so inferior its amazing. These guy seem to me to prove that metal isn't all about untalented musicians and image. I'd love for my band to be as good as Mudvayne, I really would.

Although, Pantera, Sepultura or The Haunted are also on my 'wannabe list', so does that make me a bad person?;)

Not at all. And I probably outta lighten up. I suppose I'm the kind of guy Wyno HOPES thinks he he looks like a dork. I'm not exactly his target demographic.

But I do think it's a shame that someone who is by all accounts a very talented musician chooses to dress up like a barbequed Crusty the Clown. My immediate impression is that he's an untalented boob (think Gene Simmons) just up there for show. People here bag on Britney Spears for doing the exact same thing, and she's a no less talented performer.

I really wish MTV would go away, and we could just go back to LISTENING to bands again. Then our ears could be the judge, without all of the silly visuals.

I really, really like Ryknow. The whole band's work is SO much better than a lot of the crap out there these days. All of the songs sound unique to each other (unlike GODSMACK, KORN, or LIMP BIZKIT), and you know who they are within a couple notes. It's pretty out there compared to a lot of the heavier music today. I LIKE that. The songs sound great, Ryknow doesn't do a whole lot thats going to make Jaco roll in his grave, but it's a hell of of a lot better than most of the guys out there today. He's tight as hell with the drummer, which is pretty impressive at that speed. There's a lot of cool, creative playing on that cd.

I, for one, can tell the man has been practicing. Most of the nay-sayers haven't heard the majority of the CD. If you listen and aren't impressed or don't like it, that's cool. I, for one, like their music, and I could care less how good Ryknow is as long as it sounds great, which it does.

It's pretty hard to have a great band with a terrible player in the band, and I don't think that's the case.

Like usual, YMMV.

Never heard of him/them. I'm old. I don't watch MTV anymore due to all the lame "shows" they have and hardly any videos like inthe 80's. I don't listen to the radio because I'm too busy listening to recorded gigs while driving to try to hear mistakes and think about new things to throw in. I guess I'm not "hep" anymore.

He does seem out of place skillwise. Stu Zender used to be in a punk band at one time. Can you imagine? Ryknow is very talented, and I'd be curious to see him in another band where the rest of the band can musically go where he's able to go. It's amazing to see musicians take their jazz backgrounds and jump into the "heavy" genre. They'll ALWAYS get noticed.
