Same riff and settings with the EBMM or active jazz where I commented on the WF fingers clip?

Congrats to everyone working out and losing weight. Trying to do the same here. Guestion for anyone useing active basses in this genre. Do you run into problems where the active preamps keep your bass from naturally feeding back? Also changing setting on a EQ have no real audible difference when the dirt is on? I find that the pre I put in the ibanez sounds pretty much the same weather on and flat or on and boosted. I also find since the install that it doesn't get that natural feedback like it used to. It also made the bass super noisy and I don't remember it being so microphonic before the install. Any insight other then just ripping it out? :)

I regularly use my Carvin in active mode and I haven't had any problems NOT feeding back. Get a Cthulhu Fuzz and turn it on, you'll get plenty of feedback lol. I usually run my preamp flat, but when I do play around with it I can usually hear the difference pretty easily. I don't use my Ray as much, but when I do the EQ changes in the preamp are really apparent, that's like the whole sound of that bass, I think.

What kind of preamp is in the Ibanez?

Part of that is a combination of the 2 band EQ and the Depth control. If you cut one or both of the bands below noon, you get a relative mid boost. With that one I boosted the low, cut the high and dialed the depth back. I played around a lot with each pedal trying to get a really thick mid scooped sounds and a really mid boosted articulated attack, just to cover a wide range.

Yeah it has that boosted mid/nasty grind I like, lol.

I got a Musicman Ray34, the Indonesian Stingray knockoff but I'm pretty sure they share the same pre-amps as the real deals... it sounded cool and "like a Stingray" clean into the amp and would have been good for other genres, but I couldnt get any tones I really liked through the pre with any sort of low overdrive up to fuzz. I tore the pre out and ran the pickup straight to the output jack (with an on/off in between) and now it plays with pedals swimmingly, while sounding very much like an old-school vintagey Stingray.

Can't do the scooped slap thing anymore but I'm not too concerned there, tearing out the pre and going passive made it sound ub3r old-school. So personally I stay away from active pre's.

If you check out the previous Cthulhu Fuzz demo I did, that's just a Fu Manchu style song I did with it on every instrument, that was with my Ray34CA. I really liked the way it sounded with the Cthulhu, really nice growly tone to it. I almost always run the preamp with the bass all the way up and the treble at half though.

I'm using active with some sort of dirt, OD or Fuzz on at all times and have more feedback than I used to when I was using passive basses.

Part of that is probably due to the fact that our practice space is small so I'm standing about 6-8 feet from my amp.

I keep the EQ on the bass flat for Low and Mid, and I've been cutting highs to deal with the feedback issue. I'll boost the bass if I'm using the Rat, because it cuts quite a bit of low end.

But yeah, lots of feed back if I'm not careful. It's hard to have a long sustained not without it just degenerating into feedback. However with certain pedals (Bazz especially) I can get really good gradual blooms into feedback on sustained notes.

I'm still learning how to control everything, but I think standing so close to the amp has a lot to do with it.
