S/D-85: Tasty clippings from Corey's Box

We don't mess with too many weird time signatures, although they end up in songs from time to time.

I don't think there is anything too outside of the norm on the new record. But we have talked about doing a doom waltz which I'd still like to do at some point.

The waltz is such an awesome beat. Can be so heavy if some right. Very easy to fail though.

Doom Waltz... kind of reminds me of wayne shorter's 'dance cadaverous' on his 'speak no evil' record (any jazz cats in here?)

I have a doom bossa in the works for a song section. Basically a reaaally slow I-VI-II-V in D melodic minor... By the way, melodic minor kicks ass but you sound 'new school' pretty fast (kind of like Gothic?). But minor blues scale has been done to death, on the other hand (easy to get some great riffs out of though). I like me some outside notes - a major sixth in the right place can catch you off guard nicely (sometimes heard in sludge). Mixing modes is loads of fun for the whole family too.

Oddly enough, my drummer who has been playing for 20+ years doesn't know a single thing about time signatures. I was shocked when I learned that, because he's taken lessons and I assumed that's something he would have learned. It doesn't negatively impact us though. He's way more of a feel drummer than a technical drummer, so it is pretty moot anyways.

Haha yeah most of our weird timed parts are mostly happy accidents, or when writing/recording we would just say to eachother, just look at me and then we'lll decide when we'll change.

I don't think that happened on the new record though, we actually thought this one through...for the whole record. There's a first for everything.
