Never ending, found out after removing the neck, that the black SUB,just received had August 18,2003 stamped in the neck pocket. Removed the black paint off back of neck, that had lot of scratches.View attachment 2927533 View attachment 2927536 Coincidentally the Teal SUB,is August 9,2005. Both basses made in the same month, that I was born. Sort of unique somewhat! Hope,I can manage to hang on to them. Wanting to find a white SUB,which I had once before. Things come up and have to pay some bills seem like? So here they are,Teal, and Black SUB's.
FYI. White SUB spotted GC used. Looks like a passive one.

Hello, mcnach, never got into the wiring myself. Wouldn't know the difference even if I was looking? Sorry:sorry:

I had a picture somewhere of my pickup (series) but I can't find it. However, this is what a parallel one looks like:

C_EB_PUP_4.jpg

If yours looks different, it'll be series.

In this video someone has installed a switch for series/parallel as well as each single coil. Parallel is first, series is the last bit of the clip... It's a noticeable difference even in this youtube clip (in 'person' the difference is much more pronounced), does it remind you in any way of the differences you feel between both your SUBs?

I need a cosmetic recommendation. I’m replacing the chintzy pickguard on my teal SUB and can’t decide between solid black and white pearloid. What do y’all think looks best on the teal?

I'd go for black!

Or even white... but not pearloid, too 'bling'. Parchment white or even mint white might be nice too. But black gets my vote.

Got this yesterday in a trade ...my not used motorcycle helmet/jacket and a couple hundred bucks on my part. I have never tried a MusicMan bass before but so far I like it. Body has no dings...neck either. No idea of its birth year from the serial number...

Nice find! Is it passive or active? If you post the serial number on this page at the Ernie Ball forums, they'll tell you date of manufacture: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Beautiful!

A SUB 4 digits younger was from January 2004, so yours is likely born in January '04 too. I have a white one as well, from Sep/Oct '03. Yours is from the period where I've only found instruments with the pickup wired in series as opposed to the usual parallel for Stingrays: series with the 2-band EQ is a fantastic combination, I love it.
Well done! :)

The Bass is Passive... Ive heard good things about Active ones which I find interesting because most I find in the Fender crowd are Passive fans... :)

Oh, mine is active... so we have different tonal options, but it'll still sound great, I am sure. The preamp is nice for versatility, as it gives you a wider range of sounds right there at your fingertips... but the core sound is already there, the 'beast' is there ;)

I am curious though about one thing... I looked in the tone circuit cavity and noticed very small pots and thin wiring. Does an upgrade to larget pots ..say CTS and larger wiring make any difference in sound quality? If so what do you recomend for pot values?

If the pots work as they should and are not scratchy etc, you won't gain anything sound-wise by replacing them. Same with wiring. You could try other capacitor values if you want to experiment with the function of the tone control, but there's nothing wrong in principle with smaller pots/thinner wiring for this purpose.

Sorry, mcnach, not gotten around to checking if my 2003 SUB,was wired parallel,or series. Got caught up in sanding the black paint, off the back of the neck. Not dinged, but lot of scratches,so got the paint sanded off,and left the original black on front of head stock, with original decal on front, and the serial number was moved from back of head stock, down to the battery box cover? Has a nice smooth satin finish now. A ding right by the E string tuner, shows, but not in natural part of the wood.

Thought I would share how it looks. First time ever tried doing something like this. Lot of sanding, and anxious moments!LOL

Thankyou very much for this answer...being a long time..ahem..Fender bassist this knowledge about my SUB is great.

The paint on my neck is wearing off in one spot - (actually not from me but from the previous owner). It looks like there's some kind of light varnish coating on the maple neck underneath the paint. Debating whether to repaint the neck or stripping it off altogether as the wear spot isn't that big. Will probably leave it as is, until more of the paint wears off?
I got up enough nerve to sand the paint off my 2003SUB,left the front of the head stock black with the decal on the front, and moved the serial number off the back, down to the battery box. Back of the neck, not dinged but scratched up alot. Not too bad for the first time, I ever tried something like that!
