Oh, yes... it's nothing like a Jazz :)

Here's a pic of my 2003 SUB and my G&L SB-2, which has a jazz sized neck. Pretty big difference.

NBD Managed to trade, for 2003 SUB today, with a local TBer,here in Ohio. Back of neck, had a lot of the paint, scratched in lot of places on the back. So I am sanding the paint off back of neck, and back of headstock, because the serial label on back of headstock was moved to the battery cover? Saw another thread where someone had did this to a US SUB. Maybe someone saw that in an earlier post?

Just found this page and wanted to join in. Recently picked up a 2004 SUB in Teal for $450. I had been saving up for a replacement for the black sparkle StingRay that I had to sell last year to pay some bills, and honestly I like the SUB better. Something about the 2-band EQ just works better for me, it's much easier to get the sound I'm going for in rehearsals. Extra nice to know that I don't need to come up with the $1,000 for another used StingRay.

Here is the twin sister!

Never ending, found out after removing the neck, that the black SUB,just received had August 18,2003 stamped in the neck pocket. Removed the black paint off back of neck, that had lot of scratches.

Coincidentally the Teal SUB,is August 9,2005. Both basses made in the same month, that I was born. Sort of unique somewhat! Hope,I can manage to hang on to them. Wanting to find a white SUB,which I had once before. Things come up and have to pay some bills seem like? So here they are,Teal, and Black SUB's.

Awesome!
I wonder if you could check something at some point... :)

I have an October 2003 SUB (white, not for sale, never for sale, don't even look at it! :D) and also used to have a wine red late 2005 one with the compensated nut.

The 2005 had the pickup wired in parallel, as a Stingray would, and sounded just like one. The 2003 has the pickup wired in series (stock, not modified in any way). I love the extra 'grunt' of the series one, which complements the 2-band EQ very nicely.
I became somewhat curious about the series/parallel thing, as it made little sense to me (I can't think of any MM bass of the era that used an alnico pickup wired in series, and the point of the SUB was to make a cheaper Stingray, so I'd use stock parts, not make new ones... although wiring series/parallel is not exactly adding cost but that's an extra part to have, dunno)... and every 'early' 4-string SUB I've managed to check was wired in series (2003 and some in 2004), while later examples were always in parallel).
So just wondering if you could verify whether your 2003 is series too.

I've had a 05 and now own an 03. How would one check the wiring for series?

There definately a difference, I much prefer the 03.

Your 2003 is probably in series then :)

You can check by measuring the resistance of the pickup. If it's around 2 ohm o a bit less, that's parallel. If it's higher, closer to 6-8 ohm that's series. You can also tell by looking at the pickup from underneath, and visually check whether the end of one coil is joined to the beginning of the other (series) or both starts and ends are joined (parallel)... Probably not something you feel like messing with ;) but if you feel like it some time... :)

Sonically it's very easy to tell. If the 2003 seems punchier in general with stronger lower mids, and maybe even noticeably louder... that suggests a series wiring.
