S.U.B. Club

This is weird, wish I had an answer..
Had someone interested in my US SUB,that I managed to buy just the body, and finally found an original 2004 neck, after I bought a Status graphite neck,so I found the 2004 neck, and traded the Status neck,to get the right neck. Sorry for being lengthy, but person interested had a problem saying that the neck with the serial number, was a white body, not a black. I told him yes,and the guy with the white bass, put the Status, neck on his white one,and sold it for $1300,to go overseas. So what is the problem! Venting over.

So, the kids insisted that I put the silly diamond plate back on my SUB (that they gave me for xmas a couple years ago). I did a little mod before I re-installed. Spray paint black, sand to reveal the tops of the ribs, a few coats of clear. I think it looks OK. I think I still like the plain BWB pick gaurd I had on it but its not always all about me ;-) . . .

The kids might be right.
it looks unusual and pretty good, not like anybody else's.

Well....I’m in the sub club! Just bought this translucent black model. The reason I bought it was because it is green! I even sent a pic to Praxis and asked about when they made the green colored ones! Lol. They responded back and said there never was a green one produced. What do you guys think? I’m also looking to upgrade. Any suggestions on definite ones? I think it sounds decent as is....just not amazing. I love this guitar though!

Yeah....sorry about my post. I’m new here and after reading through some of the other posts....I’m realizing this is a snob USA made guitar thread. I just thought it was a fun way for anyone who has a “SUB” guitar, to post pics and talk about their experiences. Sorry. I will bow out. Lol. It’s kind of like when I ride my Yamaha to a spot where there are a lot of Harley riders....I get scoffed at....even though the bike I’m riding in their presence out performs theirs 3 to 1. It’s almost funny. I am a true motorcycle enthusiast. I have or have had anything from a mini bike to Harley to Japanese cruiser to German sport bikes to tour bikes of all kinds....I just love to ride and talk to people who share my same passion. It’s always funny when someone who is supposed to be a true enthusiast tells you that you are not part of their club. Kinda sad, but I left 3rd grade a long time ago as I am now 51 years old. Don’t need to be bullied out of an “exclusive” club....I gladly walk away. I’m not a professional guitar player. I just enjoy tinkering with them and talking to people who love to play. As a new member to this website, I’ll take my toy and find somewhere else to play. Enjoy your cloned company.

Hi! First post here, though i´ve been reading since i started playing bass, 10 months ago.

I´m browsing this thread, i have not finished reading the 85 pages yet, perhaps my question is already answered. I recently scored a USA S.U.B. which i love. I take it to my luthier for a full setup and when he saw the neck pocket he said "alder". AFAIK, SUB bodies are poplar or basswood, so it really surprised me. Is it possible an alder body SUB? It really don´t matter to me, it could be a pine or balsa or whatever wood, i´d love it anyway, but you know, curiosity...

Poplar.
Easy enough to mistake, they weigh very nearly the same, poplar is slightly heavier.
Hardness is nearly the same, alder is a little bit harder at 590 on the Janka hardness scale and poplar is 540.
The color of poplar can lean to toward the grey and greenish while alder can get a clear coat or a trans finish or a sunburst and look better.
Poplar is generally less expensive than alder but alder was chosen by Fender all those years ago because it is cheap and abundant in the west in the USA.
According to Warmoth, alder and poplar sound the same, ...if you believe in the tonewood thing on electric basses.

Please take some pics and post them, everybody likes Bass Porn. :)

Great, thanks! The odds of being alder were low but i also trust my luthier... anyway, bass porn:

A previous owner installed 500k pots, we restored 250k; all original apart from that. Fender SS flatwounds and a 3D printed ramp.

MusicMan used poplar on those basses to save money, same reason the body is a slab and the paint job is a solid color and textured, no clear coat and no buffing work.
I love the textured paint job, no finger prints on a my black bass, or your nice maroon either.
Is the back of you neck/headstock black or clear coated?

Yeah, i knew that paint & finish & (to a lesser extent) hardware stuff. I don´t mind all that because it´s a great instrument anyway. The back of the neck is black. Maybe someday i´ll stripe and oil it or something.

I thought I saw the edges of your headstock were not black.
I agree, it's a great bass.
They used really nice rosewood on the fretboard, the fit and finish work is very good, the hardware all works good, and I love my black one having that finish.
I don't find any of the cut corners to be a detriment, but I've not owned a full price/production MusicMan.
Their new StingRay Special basses look like a whole step up from the StingRays they have been making for years.
They are even more expensive but probably worth the extra.
