Sad day for Phil Lesh.....

I was just in the local $1 store, and saw a few copies of Phil Lesh's book "Searching for the Sound: My Life with the Grateful Dead" on the shelf. Of course, I had to buy it, but I couldn't help but feel bad that his book was sitting on the shelf of a $1 store....:D

On the upside, Phil Lesh & Friends is a pretty rockin' band and is on tour right now. In fact, a local kid I've known for a while, Jackie Greene is touring with them.

Right now they are doing 10 dates at the Nokia center in NYC. And if you're interested, Phil and the band will be backing Jackie up this Wednesday on the Conan O'Brien show as he plays a song from his upcoming album.

I actually saw Phil and Friends pretty recently. It was a great show.

Actually It may have been a sad day but I just saw Phil & Friends last night 11 - 3 - 07 at the Nokia Theater in Times Square and it rocked pretty damn good. Phil is a Jam Master...never mind how good I think the Dead was, young bassists should check out Phil and expand horizons.

Yeah I saw their show in Kansas City and it was amazing, Jackie Greene was great.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. He got his advance for the book.

Never understood the Grateful Dead's mass appeal. I never thought they were that good. Its OK if you tell me I'm wrong. Everyone has an opinion.

I have a video clip of the Dead circa 1969 or 70, with a very young Bob Weir singing on a song called Saturday Night. Pretty bad vocals on that one, Bob. :hiding:

I like some of their music, not all of it, but I think it was more of the fact that they had music that fit the time perfectly, and the atmosphere perfectly. Of course, after that it was just all the aging hippies and their kids that kept them popular out of nostalgia.

And if you've never heard of Jackie Greene here is the trailer for "I'm So Gone". Here's an older video with him playing some lead guitar on his song Mexican Girl.

He's a hell of a talent. A singer/songwriter who can play guitar, bass, piano/organ and harmonica. He'd never get a gig doing it, but he can play the drums a bit too. After his tour with him, BB King asked him to be his fulltime piano player, but Jackie declined.

Yeah, I'm a fan. But its cool that a local kid that I first saw at an open mic night is now doing national tours and appearing on late night talkshows.

I saw Jackie Greene at the Blue Lamp on Alhambra with about 20 people...It was about 4 years ago I think. Way cool I saw he's touring with Phil.

I'm a big Dead fan, (not quite a Deadhead though) and I really dug Phil's book. Quite the storyteller, he is.

Book--highly recommended.
Phil's bass style--meandering, melodic, and interesting

PS....Jackie Greene's little (19-year old) brother is following in his footsteps---singing and playing guitar---my band shared a bill last month with Walking Spanish, Alex's band. Alex is not advertising that he's Jackie's brother, but he's got great support and damn, he looks alot like him.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I'll have to check them out.

Though I like them, I'm not the biggest Dead fan, but I dig Phil's playing. My guitar player and I wanted to see Phil Lesh & Friends at the Greek Theater in Berkeley which is a great venue (we saw Wilco there the week before) but we couldn't swing it.
