Double Bass Sad state of affairs on TBDB

H, This thread was never intended to be a threat of me leaving.
The response to it gives me all the more reason to stay involved.

I figure he'll just need to come to some gigs with me and see what they drive away from the gig in and who is in there with them. That should do it.
My personal experience on TB has been made of great but also quite bad moments.
Some may recall I took Sam's duty as a mod a few years ago.
There was a lot of action here then.
Some guys were really pissed off with some mods actions and we (read I) were accused of censuring the boards or the like.
Most of these accusations were simply false, but I don't want to reopen that Pandora Box...
I then asked to reduce my involvement and kept 5 forums as a co-mod, and two colleagues became mods; Jeremy and Damon.
Lately I'm geting bored myself, and may lay down moderation completely.
That said, TB is not alone in this situation.
Public discussion forums are dynamic, and what happens there is related to the people who participate, or don't...
I'm also a member of another site, since several years, like TB, and the same thing is happening there.
Many of the older cats left the place because they were tired of the same newbie questions, etc.
TB is changing?
Of course, it's life after all.

I don't think the change/loss of vibe is unique to the DB side here.
I think it's all over - the BG side, too.
I had about a year gap in participating here, and when I came back, it was Definitely not the same. And I'm not saying that in a good way at all.
I could be more specific, but if I do, I'm sure I'll just ignite a crapfest that is not necessary. But, no doubt, in my book TB is not what it was a coupla years ago.

Your experience and out-put is one of our most positive areas.
I know TB is changing, but I see no reason to have it not change in a better way.
I guess maybe I'm one of the old leftovers... I do zip right past a lot of the "best bass under $100" stuff, which saves my sanity. And it's been nice to discover "new oldtimers" like Treyzer, who lives just a couple of islands away from me! TBDB is pretty vital for me, since I'm isolated geographically.
Beyond that, PW, I read any thread that you've posted in, along with DONOSAURUS, Ed, Sam, DURLL, 'Toad of course..... There's lots more and I'd better stop lest I leave someone out, but I think you all know who you are. I really miss Ray Parker's presence here... he elevated the level of play immensely. And Ken, of course, but I can still talk to him at his own playground. NNICK, JEFE Jeff, BLOB O' BRAINSPLATTER... I really got a lot of knowledge from those guys over the years, and I'm glad that SCHNITZENEGGAR still pops in from time to time. Those luthiers all seem to know how to cut through the crap.

I'll try and come back a bit, and to give to others as you all did to me. When I joined TB, I was a junkie just out of rehab without a bass, in the middle east. Now I'm a working NYC bassist, slowly getting my rep and doing what I love. Because I literally couldn't have done it without Talkbass! Thank You once again.
And yes Paul, I'm still playing those darn gut strings on the fiver - with that silly High C string!!!

Plus how would I stay entertained without the bi-monthly argument with Damon. Love ya Damon.
Really though there is some great stuff here. If posters took the time to read profiles (and fill them out for that matter) we'd see that there are some real heavies that post gems on a regular basis. Too bad 17 year old newbies get the courage that only the wonderful wizard can bestow and the buffer of the internet can foster. Oh well. It's funny to watch Ed cut them down to size.

I'd forgotten about all that, I remember you being very candid about your situation. It's great that time and effort have changed things so much for you.

Back to the topic of other cats, I do see Ed and Ray around town every once in a while - they were so helpful to me. And boy, do they have nice basses. And yes, Ed's hands are as he says quite "Hammy" - playing those big Velvets!
I'll probably regret saying this, but... is it possible that Ed has mellowed a bit lately? I used to make popcorn almost every time he posted, finding new ways to use his no-filters approach to straighten out errant ways of thinking. Now, he seems to have a more professorial approach, taking his time to make clear, helpful points that can be taken to the bank.
No doubt Mr. Fuqua will be along shortly to rip me a new one.

It's really funny - years ago online I had this image of Ed as a gruff aggressive brute. In person he's quiet, smiling, big sense of humor, cordial (and very swingin'). He's the man!
