I swapped the HC to SC in my MV5, too.
The SC sound mellower, dirtier and more organic, whereas the HC are more polite, less mids (more scooped), less old school ....
simplified:
SC=vintage
HC=modern
I prefer the SC!

yet i actually prefer the humcancelling.
but i'll be the first to admit that the singles do have a better passive sound than the humcancelling. still, who the heck would turn off the preamp?!
I just might be the only guy on 14th street that has all the Brad Paisley cds and this bass has a great sound. I love the transparency of the finish. Sounds like a good deal.

anyone notice the pickups and their placement?!
love how the gents at the shop are trying different things. always felt that the modern could use more options, especially since for my tastes, the tone of the moderns were always too middy, ken smith like, aggressive and not that conducive to slap. but, the recent nordie loaded moderns and direction they're going in have made things really exciting!
ooohhhh man, a modern 5 w/ fat stacks in that position w/ a redwood top on a ash body w/ an ebony board is calling my name!!!

Here is mine with the Nordy big singles in Jbass position. I believe Nordstrand is making the pickups for the 5 strings thinner the the versions I have so it is easier to slap. The front pickup on mine is very close to the board

The blue one is amazing, but has a weird PU position for a 24-5 IMHO. I like this one better:

Seems to have the standard 24-5 PU placement, and look at the weight! WOW! That's what my rupture of the acromio-clavicular joint needs!
the webpage says, "j-bass placement", which looks a little too close together, but again, whatever! love the different things of mixing it up.
besides, most pickups i've had in that position that far back has been too middy for me, i.e. ken smith, roscoe, fodera, zon, etc. so this weird placement actually really appeals to me. SO, i guess its off the sadowsky shop i go to compare these new moderns.
i love new york. hahah...

I would, and do. I often leave my SC-equipped Metro UV70 5-string in passive mode. It KILLS.
BTW, I love the way bass looks, Rob. WOW. Nice score!

Thanx, Bart. I agonized selling a very nice NYC jj5 to get this bass but havent regretted it for a moment. Its about 6 mos old and just kills. Very lively, big bottom, fast thin neck. Hardly need to use the bass boost at all compared to my three 4 strings. Just love it.

+1 I generally go to passive mode when I am playing with all-tube heads. I prefer the way the bass interacts with an all-tube head in passive mode.

One thing that is kind of strange to me is that there was a modern with Nordy's in 'J position' (according to Roger's website) a while back.... I think Tommix bought and returned it, and the neck pickup looked to be sitting much closer to the fretboard. Am I remembering correctly?
I remember thinking it would be a great bass, but there was NO slap room at all.
That bass now belongs to Bikeplate (Rob). I heard him play it at a gig in Boston. It kills!

Yes your right....That is now the 5-24 that Bikeplate owns. The reason the neck pickup was so "close" was because the pickups were in EMG casing as opposed to Nordstrand normal case.
It may look close, but there was more than enough room to slap on that bass.

Ah, that makes sense... bigger cases. Cool.
I'll tell you what... the Modern 24 with Big Singles (or Big Splits).... man, there's the 24 fret J Bass 5 string that many have been looking for IMO.
The only downside is, as I've posted a few times before, there is so much space between the strings and the body on the Modern and Standard Sadowsky's that many 'J Bass slappers' would not dig it. And I just HATE the thought of a clear plastic guard on a bass like that.
However, if you are either a pure fingerstyle player, or are a slapper who is not sensitive the the string to body distance, this looks like just a killer, killer option!
Edit: I also have a feeling that the other bass I was talking about has the REAR coils in J bass position (I think they were the dual coil Nordy's... but might still be misremembering), which would move the pickups closer to the neck also.
