Safest, Most Stable Guitar Stand Available?

The gigs I play with my duo are more "listening room" style, rather than balls-to-the-walls venues with stumbling drunks. I can use a stand and not worry about it. If I am playing a packed bar with my reggae group, I'll just lean it against the amp or some safe position. If I can't do that, there's always a case to be used.

I felt the same way, so I made one for my Jazz, and Jag basses, I'm using it 4 years now, kinda simple, but it won't tip over, it's sturdy, and fits the offset body.

Looks like there are some cool stands out there.

Unfortunately I am not sure if any of them are strong enough for my anal retention.

I am old school I just use my hard case. I've never caught a case (or flare-up) of IR on stage when using one to protect my bass.

I've found that the biggest problem with any stand that has the bass sitting on a cradle like the ones below is that Jazz and Jaguar type bodies don't sit in them centrally. I've never had a problem with any of those below using a Pbass type body or acoustic guitar but the offset types bodies just want to fall to the side too easily.

I think i might need to give one of these a try.

FWIW, I use the cheapo stands. But the technique I employ is to point the bass at the amp in close range.
If someone does bump it, the bass would tilt towards the amp and not fall over completely and lose a headstock.

I used to use the Warwick 3, 5, or 7 bass rack, but don't have that much stuff anymore.

I has a Herc, but the action that should lock the bass in place failed. I went with the Ultimate. They fold up nice and small and they hang the bass which is an advantage because asymmetrical bodies can get wonky in the stands where the bass sits on the bottom.
But, no stand is 100% fool proof. Long time ago a drunk fell on to the stage right into the face of the lead singer D28 and into the SG right behind it and the neck hit the drum riser and broke off. Luckily, the drunk was a well to do lawyer who apologized profusely and paid for new replacements. No stand would have prevented that.

You're right, they'll ALL tip over and a standard $10 cheapo is as stable as any other folding stand.
Guitar boats are more stable but I've seen those tip over too. Some guys drop a 30lb steel shot bag in them to make them safer and that helps a lot.

I totally disagree.. yes they will all tip over .. but I have yet to find an affordable stand that is more reliable than the Hercules .. or the Ultimates.. I use both.. At home I have some basses mounted on the wall with Hercules wall hangers and I also have a double Herc stand and a single Herc stand.. I have used an Ultimate for years and I prefer that on gigs because it folds up so nicely.. but both brands are much sturdier than any standard stand under $40.

Very true. For asymmetric bodies, you need a stand that grips the neck, or an A-frame stand like the Fender Universal. It's actually been a factor in my decision not to get a Jazz.

+1 on the Ultimate S100. I had a Hercules double, and it worked well until it fell apart and Herc basically told me "that's too bad". I tried the S100 and haven't looked for other stands in years. I'd never trust an A-frame (or derivatives) on stage with my uber-expensive acoustic guitars or electric basses.

I really like the Hercules GS405B. The base sits very low to the ground, the forks don't spin, and it folds up easily.

The best part is the top collar. Instead of a C-shaped neck rest with a retaining strap, the collar is a padded D with a cutout on one side, which allows you to slip the neck in and out with one hand.

Do I trust it? We own two St. Bernards...

I only use 2 stands. The Ultimate GS-1000 and the Hercules GS-415B.. I have maybe 10 of each. They are really trustworthy IMHO

Got a Hercules recently and I love it. I must say tho, The guy who posted the bass strapped to the side of the amp, that looks pretty foolproof. I considered something like that before.

that's odd, herc was amazing with the lifetime warranty service on one of mine.

after many years my 415 did the thing the older ones had where the main body/housing thing broke at the swivel pin; i emailed them pics of the failure and my sales receipt, and a new stand was sitting at my doorstep like a week later.

was yours not purchased new at a dealer? did you not have a receipt for it?

Yes, new. No receipt (who the hell keeps a $40 receipt for years?). No customer service without a receipt. But ... I didn't expect a replacement, I just wanted to buy a little part and fix it. But they wouldn't do that. I cut my losses and bought the Ultimates. Short of running them over with my car, I don't see how I could break them.

the trick is just to go get another copy from the place you bought it. email a pic of that and you'll have a brand-new stand.

Like most people, I buy from a number of different places. No idea where I got it from, really. No matter, I'm sorted now, and happy.

I just bought this. It arrived today. I'm very disappointed because the bottom mount does not pivot. I presumed it does based on the single bar extending out from the stand. But it's fixed in place and does not work with the odd body size of my Fender Jazz 5. Is there a model of this brand that works on a jazz bass?

Unfortunately, I don't think so. Ironically, one of the things I like about this stand is that it doesn't swivel. Of course, all of my basses are boring, symetrical P's, Stingrays, and T-40's...
