This past Saturday I capsized my canoe while fishing. First time ever. It took me an hour to retrieve my gear from 10 feet down. Luckily the water was clear.

I also had an audience of about 20 people on the beach. They were a lot more amused than I was.

I just wondered, do we have any guys on here who have the same kind of dream ? Just to sell up and break free of this crazy world with all its read Tape and Banker and Politicians that rule your every move.

If so how about sharing your dreams on here and telling us whats your Dream would be.

I've had quite a few friends and family members who've given it a go to greater or lesser degrees. My brother ran a 48' charter cat in the Grenadines for a few years that was well stocked with water toys. That worked especially well for me given that my favorite form of sailing is windsurfing. So here I am scouting a reef off the back side of Mayreau, ca. 1999:

And buzzing the mother ship:

It was a wonderful 10 days, but also a real eye opener in terms of the expense and hassle of keeping a boat and crew happy and healthy in a fairly remote area. I did look into the idea of doing jazz gigs at various Euro resorts down there, but I tend to prefer my fantasies with less actual work involved...

However, in keeping with the spirit of this thread, I guess a foiling Gunboat cat would make for a pretty cool cruiser for a year or three:

Here's an overview of the area my brother specialized in: Discover an unspoiled Caribbean paradise — The Tobago Cays | Travel Intense . In one of my pics you can see the Tobago Cays Marine Park boundary marker. Windsurfing/kitesurfing are just a small slice of the attractions there. We encountered many sailors who had been living in the general area for years. Food and fuel are quite expensive though, as you might expect. OTOH, a large and delicious rum punch with top shelf Barbadan rum and nutmeg syrup cost about $1.50 during happy hour at the marina on Grenada we based out of.

He also worked occasionally in Trinidad, Barbados, the BVI, and New England. Now he just sells multihull boats and helps other people live the dream you originally posted about.

You're welcome. It would be a pretty great place to charter a self-skipper boat and try on the lifestyle for a couple of weeks before divesting yourself of all worldly possessions, should you actually be so inclined.

I went sailing on a small lake with my dad once, it was pretty fun but I was young and too small to actually help with the rigging and all the fun stuff.

Re windsurfing

I tried it once. Got some instruction first on a "simulator", then went out on the lake. I had little trouble getting the thing going in one direction. When I needed to turn around, I dumped it, but hey, I had pro training so no problem getting back on and raising the sail again. More straight line windsurfing ensued. I loved it.

Then it was time to stop. The water was very shallow and when I dumped it I rolled my ankle pretty bad on a submerged boulder. Somehow I limped back to shore and thanked the instructor.

That night I went to see T2 in a theater. By the time the movie was over my ankle & foot had swollen up so bad I had to take off that shoe.

Never been windsurfing again.

It's a difficult sport to master, especially if you don't live in a near-perfect place to do that. Kitesurfing has largely supplanted it in most places now anyway, although it is still pretty popular where I live, which is a very windy place:



That launch site is about 15 miles or so from my house. The guy in the video is a casual acquaintance, but I used to see him fairly often at the same spots I sailed at.

Volunteered for summer yacht racing many years ago. All fun and hard work, but no cost. Left a 'burley trail' first two days, but got my sea legs very quickly.

Spent two weeks Scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Magnificent!
