sailing - does anyone do it?

Agreed - that book, and that endorsement from Jeff are compelling. I ordered the book yesterday. If you buy from Amazon, and then spend $4 more, you can buy an eBook version as well, and access the book from any computer anywhere (presuming you log into Amazon). It's a more convenient model than alternate ebook methods I've seen, and not all books have that feature.

and being convinced of that, I picked up a copy of "Total Loss: A Collection of 45 First-Hand Accounts of Yacht Losses at Sea" (Coote and Gelder)
Billjr - yes, 9 knots when sailing sure feels faster. toss in a 45 degree heel (tilt of boat) and it's even more exhilirating. Then make that tilt unexpected, with me amidships adjusting ropes, and having to lay down on deck, at 45 degrees, head right above water, and water running over the walkway on that side, and it's even more exciting, and that was my last sunday. the rich people watching us with binoculars and telescopes, from Sausilito, must have been laughing hard...
Manic - I'm still bummed about your community's losses in the face of recent flooding, and hope everyone can recover quickly.
EDIT: Flooding in UK is HUGE now, with more possibly on the way. Fresh water shortages. Manic - I can't believe you are posting in a scenario like this, but please keep us advised. the flood water's all gone in Gloucestershire... we're back on mains water now and are just waiting for the water suppliers to tell us when it's safe to use for drinking, cooking and washing crockery and pans etc.
Every body is now in clear-up mode in the affected areas. We have working parties scheduled at our sailing club for the next few months to make the moorings safe again and repair the sailing club house and facilities. All boats except the Dahler 25 which got speared by her riding posts have now been refloated.
