Double Bass Salty Dogg strings? Any reviews?

This company's strings was recommended to me by someone else on the Palatino Megathread (EUB forum).

i'm primarily an electric bass player who gets asked to take out the electric upright (I have a Palatino) to emulate the ampeg baby bass for Latin styles (son, cha cha cha, boleros, danzones, more traditional latin jazz, etc.). I'm looking to replace the stock strings on the Palatino (which are stiff and don't have very good sound). I played a friend's baby bass and I think he had LaBella Tapewounds on it and they were so easy to play (low action, light tension).

I'm wondering if these Nylon strings would be apt for the work I need (mostly Latin styles, and the ocassional jazz gig or walking bass line work).

All I can find on the internet are alternative nylon string "weedwackers", and they all seem geared toward the Rockabilly/Bluegrass crowd. I don't play those styles.

Any thoughts? would these work for my styles and needs (lighter tension, easier for faster fretboard, jazz style work).

Salty Dogg strings are weedwackers. I don't think these would work for you.

i agree...i followed a link to a sound sample of weedwackers on another website. SOunded very dead and honky.

I guess that's the sound for bluegrass...

I need something different...but damn...Double Bass strings are all $100+

I don't play EUB, but I think a lot of Baby Bass players use Thomastik Spirocores in the solo gauge (intended to be tuned A E B F# from top down) tuned down to regular pitch. This should meet your desire for light tension. Or you could try Spirocore Weichs, which would be a little stiffer but still not too high tension. Yes, they cost more than $100 but they should last a LONG time.

Or, if you liked how the LaBella tapewounds felt and sounded, give them a try. I don't think they're expensive as bass strings go. Really, you're not going to get anything decent new for much less than a bill. You could try browsing the classifieds here for some used strings--you're probably even better off with used Spirocores than with new ones.
