Technically, I'm not a bassist yet. I picked up the guitar after a long hiatus about eight months ago. I got a decent beginner guitar that I bought over the internet, mostly because it looked cool, and I liked the company. My guitar was made by Monoprice, who is known for reasonably priced, quality HDMI cables. So naturally that translates well into guitars, right?

Its a decent guitar, but unless its set up just right, it goes out of tune with each passing breeze. I've managed to mess around (mostly with Rocksmith for the Xbox 360) and get some dexterity, but I wasn't really clicking with the instrument.

Then I picked up a friends electric bass and it all fell into place. Why pluck around with a guitar, when I can command THUNDER like THOR, right? My friend talked me down a bit, explaining that the bass was more like a bridge between the melody of the guitars and the beat of the drums.

I'm shopping for my first bass now. I've seen a couple online that look good and are decently reviewed. The
Cort Artisan A4 open pore cherry and the ESP LTD B-4E NS. I'm a sucker for a thru-neck with a natural grain showing through, I guess. I'm still weighing my options, trying to learn enough to figure out what would be a wise purchase, and what to avoid.

You can get buy with a $150 bass. A $300 one will be easier to play. I've never gotten to the $600 level and probably would not, as an amateur, ever pay $1,200 for any electric bass, but, feel no one builds junk and stays in business, so if you recognize the brand name and you like the way you look playing it - go for it.

At the price you paid for it if you see something you like better - buy it. Course that is how GAS gets started.

Thanks! I've got a friend who's into guitars, and his recollection is that Cort isn't the best brand name. But that bass seems pretty well reviewed. I'd like to get my hands on one before I buy it, so I can try it out. There's a lot of value in the used market, from what I'm seeing.
