Would it be good for recording scratch track type stuff?

Having given up my POD I can't easily record anymore. Would I just be able to (theoretically) stick this on a stack of books or something, point it at a speaker and record?

A search for "C01U" only turned up 1 review. It said it was decent...

I look at the USB mics coming out in a similar way to the small single 1/4" input USB interfaces like the stealthplug or lightsnake or whatnot. If you have no other recording gear and you just want to record stuff, the 1/4" interfaces are fine and cheaper than any other solution. Same with the USB mics, if you just want to record some vocals, they work better than a computer mic and it's relatively cheap (although at $150 for the samson you could almost get an SM57 and a single input USB interface).

If you have aspirations beyond the basics of recording, they're all bad investments because you'll quickly need to replace them to get more functionality and quality.

Thanks for the info. Ill check out that thread later. I really have no asparations beyond just sound clips and scratch tracks, and that prolly not gonna change for a very long while.

On a side note, I can get a C01U for 100 bucks locally vs. 150 for an SM57, and theres no need for adaptors/whatever for hooking it to my laptop.

I have a CO1U that I keep around for quick recordings on laptop. It's a fine general purpose mic with a high output. Mine is durable and sounds fine if not generic. I think the Blue usb mic should be looked at too, although I've never tried one.
