Sauce or gravy?

OK, so it's on your spaghetti and it's red -- It might be thick or thin, marinara or with meat. But, what's it called? Sauce or gravy?

In my old neighborhood, we called it sauce. But, lots of folks from surrounding blocks called it "gravy." This always seemed wrong to me, as I've always associated gravy with pan drippings.

So, is it sauce or gravy?

If it's tomato based, it's sauce. If it's based on thickened pan drippings, it's gravy. If it's based on cheese or something else weird, it's up for grabs.

Did I say I USED Jarred SAUCE? No. It just says so on the Jar. Or Can. We usually start with a can of quality tomato paste and build from there.

Then again, I don't know very many in-the-flesh Italians, so I've got no idea what they really call it.
