Saying System of a down sucks?

The Mars Volta is my favorite band and yes I agree that they are much more talented than anyone these days. Of course talking about bands that have formed since 2000ish.

But they are my favorite of all time. They are fun, experimental, progressive, loud, heavy-ish, fast, and just beautifully done albums. I can see how they bore people to death but I have always dug ambient music.

FTM was a little too ambient though. The material was sick though. DITC was better I thought but slightly, more actual songs, not really better in quality, just more quantity.

I dont see why people dont like them more? If people are looking for something new and fresh, that seems to be the most original and fun thing ive heard recently. Cant wait till april when the new album comes out supposedly.

Please...

Clearly you're not looking very far if you're saying these guys are the hottest thing out there.

Mars Volta...very talented bunch of guys...and the sonic equivalent of a colonoscopy. More people don't like them because they have pretentious song titles and music that's incredibly difficult to listen to.

i don't know how this thread got onto the Mars Volta but since I've seen both Mars Volta and SOAD live, I'll chime in.

At the SOAD/TMV concert, TMV played way too loud for their own good. It got to the point that anything high frequency became one constant noise. The guitar joined with the vocals and wind instruments to make terrible noise. It was so ridiculously loud. I basically went and hid somewhere until they were done.

SOAD on the other hand, came out, played at a volume where sound quality did not detiorate and put on a great show playing a very good mix of music from all albums.

SOAD is not the most complex, nor the heaviest, nor the most talented but its still good music if you like it.

Hottest no, but most different yes.

You've based your opinion on TMV, as I've seen on a live show that you thought was bad. I was at the same one and I think the complete opposite. They played good, and sounded good to me (Although I was slightly under the influence of a certain chlorophyll-filled substance :D ).

It seems to me that TMV is a love or hate band. I've also noticed that a lot of TOOL fans (like me) also approve of TMV.

Er... right.

They're talented musicians, I'll give them that, but as far as their live material is concerned... I agree with the poster above that said they play way too loud. The actual instrumentation is drowned out by booming cacophony and the fact that their jams, which run overly long through every live track they perform, are quite formulaic, it's hard to like them.

I would not go as far as to say though that their studio material is difficult to listen to, but again, I would not say that they're that great either.

P.S. System of a Down still sucks.

im under the impression that system of a down make very good "serious" and "mellow" songs. eg. Aerials.

but theyre crazy songs are a bit weird, eg BOOM!
but thats not to say they are not good songs. i think to me some of their songs are trying to put a point across that i dont really care about

Tool fan's do seem to like TMV, and why not theyre similair in a bunch of ways. I myself went from having tool as #1 to now having TMV at #1. Yea, I keep track. Tool and tmv fan's get alotta flak about how were closed minded and such which I used to be but the mars volta really opened me up I think. Im into many different things.

I missed a tmv show this year but I will see them when the new album comes out. It doesnt surprise me that they play overly loud but it is dissapointing being that I hoped they would be above that.

And, I wont say that their musicianship sucks, but system of a down puts out a bunch of horrid songs. I was watching the music channels on tv(800's) and heard "attack" and it was torture. Unfortunatley I couldnt find the remote to change it so I actually had to get up and switch from the metal station to alternative. THhat's how bad it was. I thought. But that's my opinion and none of you have to like it so you shouldnt really care. THat is what I learned from this thread. It got kinda ridiculously large.........
