Looks like one of the older ones with the "bowling ball" swirl finish. "Custom" would be the mirror guard. Not stock but an optional upgrade.

Butch at Bayou Cables makes a replacement control rig with a tone control. Easy mod if you so desire it.

The bowling ball finish was smooth. This looks like some kind of krinkle paint.

I'm going to guess that it's an SB-2 that was ordered with a custom finish.

seriously, are we in middle school?

That's the G&L "Bowling Ball' finish in dark grey.

    Here's a pic of green,

and what's probably the same color with a white guard.

I guess my mind is still in the gutter.:p

Those Swirls are dazzling in person, especially the red ones. Kinda fragile, tho.

With G&L, "custom" is a matter of degree. Not that many SB-2's around with "the works" done to them, for some reason.

This is the only SB-2 I've seen with most of the available upgrades, including a maple top...

yeah, a little odd looking, i agree..
    or flat-out ugly,I guess,from the pic..

he called it an "sb-2 custom with blk swirl finish"
but I also thought I saw something going on with the texture..is that just the swirls?
or some kind of crappy, clumpy, refin?
hard to tell in the pic

it could be a flat, smooth finish, with just a wierd photo angle, but my gut tells me theirs something wrong w the finish.

so custom means just a pickguard in this case?

    What about a TONE CONTROL?
    are they hard/expensive to add?
have to drill a hole,i guess.

    Agian,

Bowling Ball finish. This was an "optional" or some might say "custom" or "custom ordered" finish on G&L's. Unlike many brands, you can factory order a G&L all dolled up in a number of different ways. No idea if the guard is factory or not, but I have seen mirror guards factory installed on other G&L guitar models. Again, probably a custom ordered bass. Is "custom" part of the offial name for the bass ? Probably not. I'm not really sure what exactly you're getting hung up on here. Did the seller say the model name was SB-2 Custom or something? I'd bet it doesn't say that on the headstock. It could be/probably is a custom ordered SB-2 though.

Example above of bound neck, looks like an ebony board, flame top SB-2 picutred above. Not your garden variety SB-2. Neither would one with the bowling ball finish be "typical" of the breed.

SB-2 are usually much more workmanlike.

You could have a stacked tone/vol knob installed on that bass without having to drill any holes.
