SBO 2022, Big ABG scratch

A little more progress between meetings, and mowing, and all those silly things that interfere with bass building and or playing.

That little saw and my rasps are probably my two most used tools.
 
My payyernmakers rasp is not cutting like it used to. I need to go shopping.
I need tools to finish this.
New rasp, I need a bigger gouge for the plates too. And clamps. And…
This bass might get expensive.
here is my happy good time acoustic bass concept drawing. the Bruce bits are not really detailed yet, but I think I have the glimmer of a plan.

Payyernmaker’s rasp?
well I guess decent rasps require a decent payment. I bought this one maybe 25 years ago, and it’s still better than anything I can find locally.
time to pay the piper for a new one.
Do any of you have any experience with the ones Lee Valley is selling? hand cut in The Czech Republic. They Look decent, so might be worth a shot.
 
Charcoal and palm fronds and some oak sticks. its actually the body of an old sump pump, the windings are still inside so once all that copper gets hot it seems to be consistently heated. I put one of the long bolts back on to hold the top down, and also use it during bending for leverage.
I will take a picture of that side showing how that works the next time its fired up. The “C” rib on the other side is next, then I’ll trim the support bits and finish the sides.

Now, that is cool.....For a moment there, I thought you were hooking power up to the windings to heat it up. That would have been scary... Clever use of an old pump housing!

I’m about as cheap as can be, and I get more satisfaction out of making my own tools and toys, than I do out out of buying them.
it used to always the same at work too, I would make or modify all the field and lab gear to suit each project. I think I got more satisfaction from making each project possible and improving the efficiency than I got out of the actual job.

I like that attitude. It's even more satisfying if you can repurpose some old machine or thing, and save it from the scrapyard.
 
Ok. looking at my side wood and measuring…
I have enough cherry to do the whole thing. just. No waste or mistakes.
I have a bit of figured maple I could use inside the waist, the C bit, and that may make an interesting transition between the dark pretty cherry, and the figured maple. one of the bridges and tailpieces I’ve started are also maple but maybe having too many species of wood on the same bass will look weird.
as is, there is already Sitka spruce, ebony, black walnut, black cherry, sycamore, Osage orange, and maple in the plan (basswood too, but it won’t really be visible.
Actually, nothing about this design is not a little weird so I might at well just do what works.
I’m still tempted to try for all cherry on the sides, but the maple bit is easy, and may look cool. who said this was easy?
 
I think using a variety of different woods for different parts will just add to the character of the bass. It's going to be a crazy looking thing, like nothin' you ever seen before. Made from available pieces of wood. With some serious engineering in it, hand tools, and a coal-fired bender. It's a cool project. Work through it, get the problems figured out, and you'll be proud of it.
