SBO22 FSO, "New Smoothie" S-HS

Well, here we go...
In the recent past, I've decided to get a little more than "stoopid" with some of my builds. Matching preamps with pickups that I've yet to see. Kubicki w/EMG's (not to mention a bunch of Carbon Fiber). Delano w/John East. Aguilar w/EMG (although, it seems that Spector just did the EXACT same thing), etc... Moving placement of pickups. Rattle caning, etc. [EDIT] heck, I even did a Semi Hollow, EBMM Sterling ( You may, or may not HATE me. NBD... ). I can't really think of anything on the market that really interests me at this time. Well, at least not basses that I wanna afford. I'm not trying to "cop any ones tone" or be redundant. In an effort to just have FUN (as the "build off" implies) let's get crazy. Why not, right?

First, here's the blank.
Ambrosia Maple center, with Cherry wings.

Just got "cut", yesterday. Yep... 5 string rout at the bridge, for a Delano Hybrid (hence New Smoothie). And... a 4 string "J", at the neck. This will also be Delano. I really like my EBMM, HS basses. I'll be using an EBMM, 5 position selector switch. Again... John East will be the motor. Not looking to make a Music Man. Just borrowing/embellishing the concept. It'll work, or... it won't. Hmmmmmmm...
But, check this, I'll be able to split the rear coil into a Jazz, making it an "S-HS", yes? WHOAH!!!

Why not, right?

So, yeah... I may not really be building a bass, as much as I'd be "assembling" one. But... I'm gonna have FUN, AGAIN.

Hey, Marc, that's a very nice piece of wood!

Did you realise that, in order to participate, you need to photograph your raw materials with a compulsory written sentence? It's a rule, stated by @Beej in the opening post of the SBO thread.

If you didn't get a pic of your gorgeous body blank with that written sentence, you can still shoot one with the sawn body you now have. Technically, your Partial Build now becomes an Assembly Build.

I'm not that good/patient at typing/photographing. So, if I'm out, I'm OUT. Sorry. I work TON's of hours, and... the bass, even though I may have all of the components by the "deadline", it may not be done anyway. Sorry for the misunderstanding. No worries, and... Thanks for the clarification.

Oh... wait... Hmmmmmmm... It's actually THREE pieces of wood. I stated that it will be an ASSEMBLY. And, as much as I appreciate your "policing", become a paying member, before telling me what I NEED to do.

I noticed that, but for anyone who hasn't been around our parts much in the Luthier's Corner, it's easy to miss. No biggie IMHO, it's clear that Marc was not intentionally breaking any rules, so I'd say it's all good. :thumbsup: Plus, there are at least two other entries who's "wood pile pic" has the wrong phrase anyway. :roflmao:

Marc, not to worry about any of this - this is a great group of very helpful people and I've found @instrumentalist to be a good dude. :) As part of the buildoff history, we've always included a 'wood pile pic' at the start of the build threads to ensure that no one is cheating. The reality is, it's entirely fun, done for the experience, community and bragging rights and so I don't think anyone is too seriously concerned about actual cheating. Plus what are we gonna do? Bad mouth on the internet? :D It's all good, we really just want to see the build. There's something about following a build thread that's almost as addicting as building!

Maybe I'm missing something here, but what is the purpose of a 5-string PU in the bridge and a 4-string in the neck position? How do you align polepieces?

Here ya go. I got the idea for the 5 string pickup at the bridge from EBMM. The Old Smoothie, which I've read is the original idea for the Stingray. The neck pickup is inspired by my EBMM Sterling 4-HS. And lastly... I figured... why not get a pickup that'll give me an option between a Humbucker, and a Jazz? Just silly thoughts that I decided to 'speriment with.
Here's an Old Smoothie...


Here's the bridge pickup. Mine will sound different, as the strings will be between the poles.


Here's what the 5 way switch will (hopefully) do. With the added switch that come with the Delano, in position 1, I'd be able to split the pickup to only the Jazz coil. In position 3, I'd be able to do the same. Which... I guess... makes position 2 obsolete, hmmmmmmmm...

Maybe I'll use a 3 position switch instead.


Lastly, the strings will run directly over the magnets of the neck position pickup, as I friggin' LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE My EBMM, Sterling 4HS. The single coil soloed is just magical. This isn't me, but, well... you get the idea.


Hopefully, this helps Ya'll to better understand my weirdo idea.
