SCAM on Craigslist - 2008 Rickenbacker 4003

Anyway; on topic, well, actually reposting my comment from before - I think anytime a seller is conveniently "away" for an extended period of time, but wants to make the sale, you should be wary. The internet unfortunately is like that. I think what someone should do, in this case, is email him and ask when he'll be back because you'd like to do the transaction in person. And email him again when (if?) he's supposedly "home" with a different email account and see if he gives the same story.

Might be too much work, but hey, worth a shot in case it really is legit.

I broke all the Craiglist rules. They quite cleary say to deal locally and never wire money. I have reported the listing to Craigslist so I hope they'll delete it asap. I'll also file a complaint with the police. The chances of getting any money back are about zero.

Regarding some of the abuse and 'TARP'ing I received early in the thread (posts that have since been deleted by the Mod) I kinda deserved them seeing as my initial post (pre-edit) was not very explanitary and led people to believe that I may be the scammer trying to drum up business.

So he didn't address ANY of my proposed terms for the transaction. And he made no
mention about my inspecting the bass in person.

With only that as evidence, I'd say we are looking at a real live scam in progress. What do you think? Interstate fraud? Doesn't that make it a federal offense?

Interesting. Over the weekend, I followed the link to craigslist, and sent the guy an email to see if the Ric was still available. I got this reply, almost identical to the earlier one:

I still have it for sale. I want you to know that the guitar is in perfect conditions. So the guy is still active on this. Interesting to see if you can get any police support to get your money back.

ITS A SCAM!!! it happened with me today morning! Just paste it in graigslist serach Fender Jazz Bass 1968 Vintage Sunburst - $1700. Nice price, isnt it? The seller emailed me this:
"Hi There,
Thank you for your email. I still have it for sale. It's in great working condition, has no scratches or dents, never been involved in any kind of accidents. I can assure you that it's full operational.Unfortunately for the moment i am outside of my state for the next 3 months due to my new working contract ( i am a construction engineer ). When i have received this working contract, i have decided to close the transaction using a Third Party Agency (This type of agency will take care of all the transaction details). A transaction closed through this agency will assure safety for both buyer and seller at the same time. The name of the agency that i prefer to use is The OnLine OutPost.
This is a company provided by eBay for transactions closed over the Internet. It is very safe, recommended by eBay and also by Craigslist.
At this moment the product is located into The OnLine OutPost custody. I have left it there because in case we`ll agree to close the transaction they will take care of all the arrangements.If you are interested to purchase it please feel free to mail me for more information regarding the transaction terms.
Thank you in advance!"

When I saw monegram method of payment at the online outpost he sent me, I emailed back to him

I'm sorry William, since there lots of scam lately, I never send money over moneygram or western union, only PayPal. If we can do our transaction with paypal, I'll go forward with the payment, if not, I consider it as a scam.

He never emailed back.

Be very very carefull, when you deal with moneygram or western union even is its a online outpost.

Dents? Accidents? Is he talking about a bass or a pickup truck? ;^)

Can someone explain why Western union is especially frightening? I'm getting ready to sell a cab to someone in Norway, and I don't use Paypal anymore (long story). He's willing to pay the Western Union fees (and the enormous shipping costs), and is getting ready to wire me the $$$ for the cab. Am i in danger of getting ripped off, or is it only him (buyer) who needs to worry about me (seller) with WU?

Western Union isn't bad necessarily, but a lot of scammers do use it. There are plenty of honest users who don't like Paypal (most who have lost funds due to disputes due to overzealous buyers filing quickly) that use MOs without problem.

*A lot of the Western Union problems seem to come from Craigslist, at least most of the ones I've seen have.

There's your proof that it's a scam right there. Ebay has their own third-party escrow agencies that do not include the Online Outpost, and Craigslist states very clearly that they do not recommend any escrow agencies.
