SCHECTER STILETTO ELITE 5 or fender std j bass

Have you tried Ibanez models ? For example: Invalid Link Removed
I have tried the Schecter Stiletto Elite 5 and some Fender Std Jazz basses. Personally out of those two, based on sound, I'd go for the Fender jazz bass but regards manufacturing maybe the Schecter. But I prefer the playability and the sound of middle range priced Ibanez basses such the one I quoted.

Schecter stilletto elite 5. Much more bass then the fender J, imo. Even if the schecter was a 4 string. But both are diff enough in playability and sound to warrant decision being made by yourself based on which one you like better sound potential wise and playability wise from firsthand trying them both yourself. Myself is no brainer for if I was looking at both, the schecter would be clear and easy winner.
I think it really depends on what kind of sound your going for. If your going for a heavy rock sound, get the Schecter. I have the same bass and I've used it for years in heavy rock bands. I mean it's versatile it'll work for other styles, but I think if you want to do like Indy Rock style stuff, the fender is going to be a better choice. Of course I haven't tried the fender.
For me it'd be the Schecter. Great basses at great prices. I've never been impressed by a MIM Fender. 
I have a Schecter and 3 MIM Jazzes. If you're into modding, go with the Jazz. If you want ready to go out of the box, pick the Schecter.
For a 5er, there are alot of brands I'd take over Fender - I'm a Fender fan(own 4 of them), but I've always found their B string to be lacking... Schecters can be hit or miss - but if you get a good one, they can be really nice.. For example, I returned a Stiletto Elite-5 that I bought new, because it didn't play that well, and dissapeared in a band mix - however, I have a Hellraiser-4 that kicks all kinds of ass... Other 5ers I'd consider are Ibanez, and Spector, if in your shoes...
