School me - Olinto shortscale basses

Hey everyone,

Loved the Olinto basses I've managed to play, and was thinking of buying a shortscale ("mustang") bass.

Anyone played them? Thoughts?

Anyone compared them to a vintage Mustang?

Any comments on Olinto basses in general?

I played one or two of their Mustang basses at NAMM. I think they felt and sounded great. Olinto in general feels expensive for what it is, but that is a whole can of worms and people love them.

I've owned 3 vintage mustangs. Most modern boutique Mustangs I think are nicer than the vintage ones. Vintage mustangs were entry level, QC sometimes questionable.

Of all the Mustangs I've played and owned, the JMJ is my personal favorite all arounder and the best bang for the buck. Just my opinion of course!

Yes I think the build quality was very high. The price tag was sticker shock but if you can get a deal I think they're nice basses.

The headstocks look kinda big, especially on the 5 strings. Otherwise they look awesome.

I noticed a few people complaining about that... I'm a guy who likes big headstocks... But I can deffo see it being a bit marmite.

My only experience with a Mustang bass was a vintage one I played 50 years ago. I owned an EB3 at the time and my recollection was the Mustang’s fit finish and general appearance looked 2nd rate compared to the EB3 (and a whole lot less expensive), but sonically, playability wise, it was a much better bass. You just had to get over the ”student model entry level” vibe from it’s appearance. I’m pretty sure ones made today look much better, and when you plug them in, their going to sound like just like an electric bass.

The Olinto basses definitely don't feel like beginner models... I mean they're like €4000... So you'd hope not.

All I can say is whomever designed the frequency range for those rotary pick up selectors must have been a guitar player or tone deaf.I had two of them, different revisions. Results were the same. Setting 1 I got all mud all the time, the other three were flat to trebly with no low end all the time.

I love the mud setting... But it's a VERY specific sound!

Ooh that's very positive! I loved the Ps I've played but haven't tried an Olinto shortscale yet.

It does weigh a lot.

That's the only con.

The pros?

Feels astounding.
Sounds incredible
Looks the part
The quality is jaw dropping

It's super super phat sounding. Like it's as deep as my P. Wildly.

It feels completely hand carved.

The pickup is super high output. Wham!

Overall a total keeper.
