I am now working on Schubert's C Major symphony (Great). Our conductor has asked both cello and bass sections to play this slurred "dotted quarter eight" pattern as detaché everywhere it occurs, which is throughout the entire piece.
Personally, I am finding the detaché version challenging for this one hour piece at fast tempos. More importantly, the detaché sounds quite different from what I hear on recordings. I am curious if this is a common request? (My conductor says that we will sound "cleaner".) Perhaps this a personal preference by the conductor? Or a criticism of our cello/bass section? Any one have this experience?
