Scott Devine's (Scott's Bass Lessons) Strings

Hey guys,

I've been watching a lot of Scott's Youtube videos, and his tone is simply amazing. I believe he's using flatwounds. I do realize that a significant portion of the tone is how he plays, but if I can get close then put my own style on it, that'll work.

Does anybody know what brand he's using?

Are you talking about his relic P bass? The ones with black silk? Those would be La Bella 760FS (45-65-85-105).

I think he uses flats on his P basses, thats all I've noticed...I bet if you went on his facebook page and asked him he would tell you!

Those are La Bella flats 760FM (mediums) not the standards.
He's using Dunlop super brights on his other basses at the moment for roundwounds but he says he hasn't really tried many strings.

I thought he said in a video (haven't seen the video above - no sound on this computer) that he had Chromes on, but I might remember wrong. Would fit the dark blue silk though.

EDIT: I just watched the video, and while he says he "thinks they are LaBellas", they definately don't look like LaBella 760FMs. First, the silk is a dark blue, not medium blue, and second: the strings in the video have got silk at both ends. AFAIK, LaBella DTB strings usually have silk only at the tuners, unless they are string-through sets. I remember askin Jason about this, since I had bought both types of DTB strings from him at one point and was confusing them for each other.

The sound he gets is admittedly LaBella-like, but he explains in the video that he usually plays with the tone all the way off.

I actually missed that part the first time I watched the video, maybe a year ago. When he mentioned "La Bella" and I saw what I thought was black silk, I assumed they were the 760FS (the only set out of all 760's with black silk). @Klonk is right about the La Bellas having silk only at the tuner end. (Not familiar with the thru-body version.)

I watched the video again myself and there's something else I didn't think of before... Where the silk starts on all four strings sure don't look like La Bellas, either. (The red silks on my 760FL don't line up neatly like the ones seen in the video.)

Dark blue silk at both ends and based on the consistent winding length on all four strings and where they start, they look more and more like the Chromes now.

Contrary to my initial assumptions, we now agree Scott uses the D'Addario Chromes Flatwound, not La Bella.

The guy who has the luxury of owning three P basses with three different sets of flats (La Bella, Sadowsky & TI) would never have to worry about trying anything else.

I once owned a Fender MIM P bass that my son played for the high school jazz band for three years with a set of Chromes ECB84 (40-60-80-100) and it sounded GREAT! Go for it!
