Scott Whitley SWB-1

Well. They will be quite a bit more expensive. :D So maybe not buyers remorse?

They will have all EMG electronics (pickups/pre-amp), 5 part maple and walnut satin neck, wilkinson tuners, ebony fretboard, and available in two finishes (matt walnut and ash) and (gloss quilt maple).

Hey Bigal. There are a NUMBER of upgrades over the SWB-1. (Wilkinson Tuners, EMG pups, EMG Pre-amp, 18v, satin 5 piece maple and walnut composite neck etc) so these go for £850 (About $1100). They'll be on pre-order soon. :)

ok, cool!

One other thing I forgot to mention in my review: when you don't have the volume control fully open or closed there is an increase in hum. I have the passive version. When you dial the volume a bit (or more) back it's not as quiet as the fully open position. Do you notice this as well?

I have finally had a little time to invest with the bass after spending most of the summer with my kids and grandchild. :-)
I cannot say that I notice any difference in humming between volumes. Rather, as expected, when I turn down the volume, the humming decreases. I can't find any faults with the bass so far at all.

About the volume difference between the pickup positions, maybe I notice it if I pay close attention, but it's not something I would have given a second thought to if you hadn't pointed it out to me. :-)

Since last time, I have also taken delivery of a Chowny CHB-1 semi-hollow bass, and it's a beauty, too!! The CHB-1 is a super-fun bass and has that classic vibe to it. I'm really happy with my Chowny bunch! :-)

Got a SW newsletter the other week, so I thought I'd whack some of the details in here.

".............I worked closely with Jon Moody from GHS strings last year to help address the age old problem of some short scale strings being too short i.e. the wound part of the string doesn't quite reach the nut. I've had this on several basses both with GHS and D'addario strings and ended up using medium scale strings.

I suggested a wound length that I thought would work on ALL my short scale basses (excluding floating tail piece/through body strung) and Jon had sample strings made around this length and sent them me to try on my varied collection of short scales. The end result is that GHS have updated their short-scale strings spec and we now have a much more viable and universal SS string option.

Read about it here on the GHS website............."

Yours is officially the heaviest bass we've made for some reason. So it's rare and collectible for that alone ;-)

Thought I'd "weigh in" on this (no pun intended). I just received my ash bodied SWB-1 and it weighs all of 9.5 lbs. Was a little surprised by the weight, but otherwise it is a very well made and good sounding bass. Glad I found it. It is serial #S161195 in case that helps identify a batch of heavier than average SWB's. @chowny

Welcome to the club! So I guess the weight of mine and a few others isn't because of the mahogany, so much for that theory. In any case, let us know more about your feelings about the bass!

Yeah, I really like it. I'm just getting back into playing bass after quite a layoff. Did quite a bit of research and playing different basses at GC and the like, but then I stumbled onto Scott Whitley's site and decided to take a chance on the SWB-1 without having ever played one. I'm glad I did. Although for years I played an 80's Schecter P bass, so the string spacing is something I'm still getting used to. I do enjoy the shorter fret spacing as I'm not that tall of a guy. So far I've only played it unplugged or into a little bluetooth speaker, so I have yet to really hear its potential. Still trying to decide on an amp. Will probably just get a Rumble 100 for now until I get my chops back.

NICE, LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THAT SWB-1. I'M THINKING ABOUT GETTING ONE TOO.
THE SMALL AMPEG COMBS ARE NICE TOO.

YEAH, 9.5LBS IS A DEAL BREAKER. CHOWNY WEBSITE HAS THEM AT 3.2KG/ 7 LBS? THAT'S A BIG DIFFERENCE.

9 lbs 6 oz wasn't what I was expecting, but considering how much I liked the bass, not a 'deal breaker.' Posting in ALL CAPS on the other hand...

I am looking for a good deal on a Rumble 100 as well; all I have is a 20W Acoustic practice amp from about ten years ago. I've played through a Rumble at a store and it was terrific.

Holy crap, 9.5 lbs for a shorty!?! That's insane.

Those Rumble 100s are nice though man, can't go wrong. And i've heard of plenty of people using them as monitors with PA support too. So there's the chance that's all you'll need.
From what I've gathered there are only a few 9.5 pounders floating around, so don't let that put you off. Mine happens to be one of the heavy ones, but it's got a great feel so I'm not too worried.

I went and test drove a few practice amps the other day. I'm pretty set on a Rumble 100 at this point. You can find them used at GC for about $225, so that's not bad. Has plenty of volume and headroom for my present needs.
