+1 on the Q-strip. Sounds great and it's an amazing tone shaping tool.
Your initial choice, the M81, is as clean as it gets. And it's really affordable.
The Noble tube preamp has been my go-to for five and a half years. Clean and superb tone.
Here is what it sounds like. P-bass tone on full --> Noble XLR and no EQ --> Focusrite DAW

I use a Mesa preamp/DI. With the voice off and the tones set flat it is pretty much a straight wire with gain. It has 2 DI's. The main one is pre or post EQ and the aux DI is post. The aux DI is nice when going ampless as it can be used for controlling your monitor mix while still sending a flat signal to the FoH. It comes in 2 flavors
Mesa/Boogie Subway + Bass Preamp and DI Box or Invalid Link Removed. The plus model adds a high pass filter which is well worth the extra $50

i got the laney digbeth bass pre recently and i love it.
clean and dirty both sound great to my ears
...but if you just wand a clean pre with di for the board, the m81 should be a great choice. sounds good and is small

+1. I was gonna mention it, scrolling through the thread. A really nice kiss of tube flavor, without coloration. I've gotten compliments on the tone, at sessions. Yeah, it's pricey...
How long did you think it would take for the first mention of Noble? I would have thought late on page 1, and indeed it was the last page 1 post.
Maybe there’s a reason for that?
Both are great products that do “clean” very well.
If’n your on a budget, the ol’ Fishman bass preamp can be had for cheap. $75-$85. Great clean tone. A little “dull” sounding to my ears. But the DI is quiet and the one knob comp is actually useful. I keep one around just because.
Pretty much interested myself. How is delivery time considering its a one man business as l understood?
