Final had time to get to London on Friday and check on the progress of my bass...
And wow!
Everything I had hoped for and then some. It's looking amazing and going off to the finishers for the grey stain on the light woods and then the super gloss finish. The fingerboard wood is just astounding, none of these photos quite do it justice. shaping the body revealed an imperfection in the facing wood, but it's on the back and once the grey stain has been applied it'll be hardly noticeable. Discussed pickup options with Martin and we're going for a pair of Gary Willis Signature model Bartolinis. Martin was saying that if everything goes to plan the bas could be ready in two months time!

As for my "Oil Slick" - gigged it last night - this thing is rock solid, and just GRRRRRRROWLS!!! I love it!!!
The instrument is simply wonderful. I raised the action / relief a tint but, as it played too easily beforehand - I prefer to let my fingers do the talking on a fretless, rather than having a constant "mmmrrreeeeeeowwwwww" in every position - that kind of setup sounds a bit thin to me.
Anyhow, I guess what I am trying to say is that it sounds fantastic. the house engineer complemented me on the sound. Plus I had a fair few folk ask me during the interval, and after the gig, what it was. I even had one comment from a woman who said "I don't play any instruments, but I just wanted to say that yours sounded really great, and looks amazing". Just a pity about the hefty bloke playing it, huh? hahahaha

That looks incredible. What is the facing wood, is it flame sycamore or ash? I can't work it out. Whatever it is, I think the grey stain will really bring out the grain and that fingerboard what can I say fantastic.

Red - your bass looks lovely - really imaginative wood combinations and that fingerboard is just gorgeous.
Martin has been very busy - I know there are even more Sei's nearing later stage or competition - next up is mine!

Jezebel's back up and playing like she should. After experimenting with the Overwater light 7 string set, I've changed to 22-130 gauge S.I.T. strings and the bass is playing and sounding fantastic. From really deep lows to really sweet highs it's just amazing.

Thanks for all the kind comments. The font and back facingings are flamed sycamore and the neck is flamed maple. The grey and orange look was inspired by this bass on the Nordstrand site:
On mine though all the light-coloured woods will get the grey stain as to me the plain neck and back of the Nordstrand is a bit bland when compared to the front.
Definitely getting excited now, but I've told Martin to take his time and not to rush anything. This bass will be ready when it's ready.

well I called the boys yesterday afternoon and Alex said the bass wasn't quite ready so it'd be Tuesday for sure - then I was just about to hop on the tube and head back from work (I'd been in at 8.30am and had finished by 3.30pm so it was early doors) then my phone buzzed again and Alex said: "Martin says if you want to come by he'll get the bass ready..."
So after Martin had fitted the ramp - and initially tuned it E - C, which sounded and played great, I actually always wanted it B - G - so after that was remedied it was all good - well not exactly - it was stupendously, supremely f$%^&*&! -ing wicked!
The pics I've taken so far really are pretty crap as the lighting was all wrong - I'll try and get some better ones when the sun comes out in the next day or two - but she plays like a dream and the depth of tones and sheer fruitiness of the woods (especially the ultra-pingy ebony board) are just amazing - and the 33" scale makes it so easy to play. By comparison there was a second hand 36" scale Fodera in the Gallery and I have to say it's probably the biggest bass I've ever seen - when Alex was holding it it looked like a giants bass.... shorter scale lengths are the best!
Anyway - I couldn't resist knocking up a quick vid so you can see and hear her in action - it's just me jamming a little - nothing special but even on this quick recording you can hear the slap and fingerstyle tones are just great:

All I can say at this point is that I just picked up Rampant Rabbit again this morning and she is one addictive baby! The more I play it the more I get used to the neck (which is like butter) and I know I'm going to be able to play stuff on this bass that I've never been able to play on any other... thank f*** for the Easter weekend - I need a break with lots of bass in it.

I'm gently enquiring if I can join in as I am a Sei Jazz owner and have been for 8 or 9 years or so (can't remember when I had Pecks built for me!). My beauty is on the web-site on page three of the jazz basses and is top left, american walnut over swamp ash with a sycamore line and a maple board.
I play mainly at church & church related stuff although vaguely interested in finding another outlet. However, having just joined the ranks of the unpaid, I don't suppose the GLW would look too favourably on me spending huge amounts of time chasing down other opportunities to be out of an evening!
Am I required to load a picture? I think I recall someone saying it was mandatory, but I think the only snap is with me attached demonstrating the older bass-players comfortable contours. Thank heaven for the chamfered body.
Anyway, I'm going to push send or return or whatever and see what happens!

Thanks Juan - it's my Epifani 502 head running through an EBS Proline 1x15 - they work well together - tho I'd like an all-Epi set up soon.

Welcome Bob - god to have another member and that's a lovely looking bass man.
Hey 7 - what can I say - the bass gets better looking and better playing every time I pick it up - it's a monster - can't wait to try her out live - I have a gig on Friday so that's going to be the night I think...!
I'll keep y'all posted and get some better shots up as soon as I can.

There's one other picture but I'm not that sure it adds that much.
'Pecks' because it is a SEI5 which looks like SE15 which is Peckham! Hence Pecks. And she is a beauty. I appreciate from this list that the single-cut is gaining in popularity and the instruments that I have seen are wonderful, absolutely gorgeous - as is anything that Martin does - but they don't float my boat like a jazz.
I hope no-one takes that as a diss, it's genuinely not meant to be, but I think a bass should be a little more traditional in looks. YMMV
In fact looks were pre-eminent when I had had Pecks built, using that the theory that if I couldn't take my eyes off her, then I probably wouldn't be able to take my hands off her either.

Fortunately it was Martin building her who took it upon himself to ensure that not only did she look lovely, but that she's the equal of any instrument in terms of quality of build etc. No doubt you agree, in terms of build quality (otherwise you wouldn't be here) but disagree in terms of specifics. There was a lot that Martin threw in, for example the neck is both flamed and birds eye maple, for no extra charge (this was a long time ago!) and he looked after me in many ways that a pro or someone who was more technically competent wouldn't need. As a result, I trust him implicitly.
