2 more weeks I'm afraid (he is 1 week into a 3 week holiday). :crying:

Thanks also for all your kind comments about the Sei 9. I'm really loving it and finding it hard to do anything other than play it at the moment (so worth the wait!). The specs will answer most questions:
  • Wenge / Bubinga through neck (maple accent stripes)
  • Chambered ripple ash wings
  • Two tone Bubinga fretboard
  • Spalted maple facings
  • Delano quad coil 'musicman' pickup and Audere circuitry
  • Graphtech acoustic and midi outputs
  • Strung B, E, A, D, G ,C, F, A ,D
  • Cheat switch round the back (drops the top 4 string pickup coils effectively making it a 5 string bass)
The bass was designed really around achieving the classic finger style funk sound, which it absolutely nails (I've never really been a slap player). The Audere circuitry is highly flexible and therefore with a little EQ tweaking the bass can go from the deep powerful Jazz type sound through to the classic bright slap tone. I got Martin to use the acoustic guitar (not bass) version of the Graphtech Ghost module, which gives a magical beautiful acoustic guitar sound for the top 6 strings. Haven't got to try the midi yet as I do not have the kit and there are rather a lot of other sounds to enjoy for the moment!

One last comment is chambering the wings has had a surprisingly large impact upon the bass. It has really helped to make the instrument sound and feel more alive, though of course no real acoustic output (does mean that I have to be even more careful about damping those strings I'm not playing...:hmm:).

I'm afraid I'm a live player only and do not possess any of the equipment or knowledge to create sound / video samples for posting on the Intranet. Sorry...

That answered any questions I had.

So the top 6 strings are the same as a guitar but down a tone ? (hence the guitar circuitry).

Proves there's more than one way to skin the proverbial cat. Not that I don't like cats of course, we have 2 and this wee one's coming to us at the end of August.

How did I miss this!!!!!!

Looks totally fantastic and from looking at the photos, Martin has done his usual brilliant job.

I really like some of the features you have incorporated including the Midi. Is it on all strings and is it the Axiom system? Also the cheat switch is a brilliant idea to cut out sympathetic string noise if you only need the bottom 5 strings.

Would be very interested in hearing how you progress with it over the coming months.

as an addendum to my last post, I was diagnosed with the dreaded swine flu last week. I have a mild attack but I am still too unwell to practice which makes it even more boring.

Anyway I am in quarentine at the moment which finishes in the next few days which will be nice.

Hope no one else here has caught it.

I'm still struggling to get that Jaco "growl" out of the OilSlick and one of things I wanted to know was which strings do you use? Also if they're roudnwound do you protect you fretboard with anything special?

I'm not mike :-p i know that... :-) I just know he uses really thin strings.. REALLY... i got one lesson with him..

Personally, all this "round wound or not?" is ridiculous.. I think it's all crap. I have played frettless most of my playing time. I played a jazz with rosewood frettboard. No stop for 3 year. Fretboard was still perfect. My opinion is, you really HAVE TO GO FOR IT FOR A LONG TIME, to be able to damage the fretboard. Not to mention, that with ebony, this jazz would have lasted even longer. Anyway, as for this jaco growl.. I think the "oilslick", isn't the bass for it... but that's just me...

all this is in my opinion... nothing more, nothing less;..: -):)

You are probably right about the growl. However I've been using flatwound up to tonight and the difference with roundwound is amazing, totally different bass, almost too bright

I love that this bass has so many tones, I may never get to the jaco sound but it's got plenty else to offer... I also think it has something to do with my technique ... I need to work on it and to work on it and to work on it and to work on it .... :)

Thanks for the nice words - I was using Elites Players series roundwounds on that clip - they sound great and to be honest I've always used roundwounds on that bass and the ebony fretboard is so hard anyway that they only leave the faintest of marks - nothing serious and that's after 5 years... IMO it's the only way to get that true growl - re the Oilslick's tone I think you might want to try a different Pre in there but have no great suggestions - go and see Martin and ask him.

Re Pierre's comments about my strings I'm actually using slightly heavier strings now from D'Addario and they are making my Single Cut sound like a new instrument - so much tone! I've left the Jeff Chapman fretless with the Gallery as it needed a set up and I've asked them to use the heavier D'Addario strings which are nickel plated roundwounds 35 - 130 - so I'll let you know how it sounds with the new set up when I get it back.

Oh and Pierre - cooooolllll baasssssss duuuuuuuuuddddeeee!

It looks wicked - can't wait to see the end result - not long now - hang in there. It's so worth the wait :smug:

Thanks for the response. I went for the Elite's by chance yesterday (PLayers 40 -125) as their office is close to where I work at tower bridge. The tone has completely changed, dare I say closer to the growl, but I think you and Pierre are right, either i change the pre-amp or I accept that this bass is not the growling type :) In honesty I'm growing to love uniqueness so I may just leave the poor thing alone and focus on learning to play it and do it justice.

Pierre - That bass looks fantastic!!! bet you're drooling with anticipation :)

Thanks Kevin, I'll start saving my pennies ... When it needs a setup in the future I'll get Martin to sort it out. For now I'll leave it, with all the advice I've got at least I know where the issue is...I may even leave it as is

I say leave it as is, it's got plenty and plenty and plenty to offer...
It's an amazing bass... just wasn't my thing...
but still evry time i see a pic, i think i shouldn't have sold it...but i'm not the one that'll keep a bass just for the look!!! :)
