I don't know about its tonal merits (I suspect not great) but I love the way sapwood looks on a facing. The more like a tree the better in my book!

Pierre, your new Series 2 looks a slightly different shape to others I've seen (including the Melt top I owned that is now yours). Is that actually the case and if so is it intentional?

Sadly I've just had to sell my headed Flamboyant 5 so am currently Sei-less. It may be a while before I can manage to buy another (I'm buying a new house) but I'm hopeful I'll get there eventually.

I actually did a quick search about the tonal qualities of sapwood. I found a thread on an acoustic guitar forum where a builder was talking about the lack of difference vs the regular wood (heart wood?)

Even if there is a tonal difference the sapwood is going to be such a small proportion of the overall construction that I don't expect it to matter.

I got the feeling that Martin approved of the decision. :D

Hi Pierre

Those specs are great and the bass looks amazing, I'll try and check it out before you nab it for good! I have to agree with Keith re his comments on the Demeter pre - I've grown to really dig it as a circuit are initially feeling like it didn't shape the mids enough but now I love it - it's certainly mellow but the tones are so useable that it's hard to fault.

Congrats on yet another stunning bass mate - and Rusty C, great looking fretless man - same top wood as my Jazz - so great to see more of it going out there!

No real bass news with me aside from the fact my Single Cut is now three years old! And it's playing and sounding sweeter than ever - I love that bass so much and so does every one who plays it - even the single cut haters :)

Nice new basses there Rusty and pierreganseman, both truly beautiful and make me want to order another..:hmm: Nothing like a beautiful new bass after having had a wait a bit for it. Looking forward to seeing Nickthebass' bass, as I love the Cocobolo heartwood and sapwood look on a bass.

Sad to see HPM's Sei bass back up for sale at The Gallery (built about the same time as the SEI 8). Haven't seen sight nor sound of him for best part of a couple of years now. Paddy, any idea how Howie is?

Mike, I really like your latest composition...very nice!

BTW The SEI name came about because it is the Italian word for six and six string headless basses were Martin's preference (and the exception) when he first started building them all those years ago.

I have had quite an eventful time of late (especially today!) - thought I'd share and update you all if you don't mind. :p

As you may remember I've been off the scene here for some time as I had to get rid of my Sei's for wrist reasons! :(

Well firstly - Alex put me unto an immaculate used Marcus Miller Jazz a little while ago and it just felt right from the get go. I dropped in a John East Preamp a couple of months ago and the whole thing has come alive - I've found myself an instrument that really works for me and I'm loving it. Big time keeper :)

Now for the big news - I tried my fretless Sei that wasn't shifting, just for old times sake to see how I got on with her. She was in desperate need of new strings (totally dead!) and new batteries (practically dead!), to be fair she wasn't sounding great and I can understand why she wasn't selling! Well, the osteopath must be doing something right as I had no pain/reaction at all. My fretless Sei is back home with me with new strings, new batteries and sounding fantastic - I've been playing all afternoon and absolutely no pain, couldn't go for 5 minutes before.

Looks like I'm back in the Sei way :hyper::hyper:

Paddy, are you playing in a band called Javacaine? I gather my old mate Dave Ross has just joined you... he used to work in Rockbottom in Croydon back in the day when I used to hang out there every Saturday and impress the kiddies. :D

Hey guys -

Howie's doing well, he's coming to my wedding in September, don't speak to him as often as I'd like though :D

Russ - yep, started up a new band about a month ago and we're just getting a set together at the moment. Hopefully we'll be out gigging soon enough. Going well and I'm quite excited with it all :)

Bass is stunning :) and snakewood works great for frettless :)
It has very even tone/sound wich can only get nicer as the bass is totally new at the moment!!! Its hard to put words on sounds but i would say its relatively comparable to ebony but maybe a bit "softer"

The only weird thing that is pissing me off in some ways is the unusual amount of dead spots on the C string from the 12th frets onwards. I shall have a word with the sei master about that maybe it will change cuz he did say that the 'board needed to be played in order to get the bass going and growling. But still....

The weird thing as someone stated, I now have 3 single cut. They ALL have a very different shape. I guess you'd expect two five string to look the same.... I wonder if he does that to adapt to the size of the facing.. Or does the shape of the bodies by hand? Do not know :-)
The beauty of handmade stuff :) all unique:)

Anyway I will go back to praticing intonation now =D

Good stuff, will have to see if you guys are gigging next time I'm back in the UK. :) How's your wrist holding up with the rehearsal schedule, etc?

Should only be another week or two until my Sei is ready! :hyper:
