Sei Owner's Club (Part 3)

Hi there,

I´d like to show you some pictures of my nearly finished Sei Flamboyant headless.
It´s got an Ash body with a gorgeous Koa top. The electronics will be a Demeter preamp with a master volume, pickup pan and a passive tone blend.
The pickups will be a Bartolini MM humbucker in the bridge position and a Splitcoil on the neck.
This week I talked to Martin and he was very friendly and helpful because I was unsure of the electronics.
Thanks a lot to Rusty Chainsaw who was so kind to write me about his experience and gave me some advice.
I nearly waited 12 months but had to cantact Sei Basses to get some response and it was sure worth it... 3 more weeks and it should be ready!

Wow, that looks fabulous! By strange coincidence I was only thinking recently that I'd like a Sei with a flamed koa top. Definitely a good idea given how yours looks! Only thing is I also want another buckeye one to replace my old one (or my old one back would be nice...)

Just out of interest, does anyone know where this Sei ended up following the move from its original owner?

A sad day has arrived , in the next few weeks my Sei, Wal, Clarus, 2 Accugroove Tri 112Ls and misc. bits and pieces will be for sale.

My hands are now so painful that I cannot play the bass for more than a few minutes before they start hurting. I cannot do anything to help my hands as I have a degenerative medical condition. So, it is now time to call time on my 28 years of bass playing and protect my hands for work and life.

I will be speaking to Martin and Alex to see if they will sell my stuff for me and if they are able to help the basses etc will go up to The Gallery as soon as possible.

Sad, but life goes on.

My hands are now so painful that I cannot play the bass for more than a few minutes before they start hurting. I cannot do anything to help my hands as I have a degenerative medical condition. So, it is now time to call time on my 28 years of bass playing and protect my hands for work and life.

I will be speaking to Martin and Alex to see if they will sell my stuff for me and if they are able to help the basses etc will go up to The Gallery as soon as possible.

Sad, but life goes on.

Oh man. That's terrible.

Good luck with punting the gear, but do keep at least one bass around - a friend of mine (guitarist) developed MS and had to quit his band due to its symptoms, he sold most of his guitar gear, but kept an acoustic, a Squier Strat and a practice amp around just because he couldn't imagine never playing again. He's past the point where he can gig for more than a few minutes at a time (he's mostly wheelchair-bound), but he still dabbles and sometimes records bits and pieces at home.

My condition isn't the same as yours, but I'm in too much pain when playing so I'm finding a new home for the 9 string.

I know words are little comfort, but my thoughts are with you.

Matthew, that's awful. I've been having bad nerve trouble in my right arm and hand for the past few months which is limiting my playing time (ironic seeing as I'm now gigging frequently) and I thought that was bad. I'm really sorry it's come to this for you. I hope (maybe against hope but you never know) that your condition resolves itself. Take care and all the best.

Thanks for the interest in my basses. Both are truly one off's, especially the 9 fretted (not based on any of Martin's normal shapes). Prices were very reasonable, but inevitably more than his more regular basses due to their bespoke nature and lots of optional extras specified (e.g. LEDs, piezo's, midi etc.).

A chat directly with Martin is always the best starting point if you are interested in possibly buying a Sei bass.

Can anyone who has a Schack circuit in their Sei supply a photo of the wiring connections (a clear shot of the cavity should suffice)? I had a couple of wires come loose and wasn't sure where one of them came from. I've obtained a wiring schematic from Martin but it doesn't mean much to me unfortunately. A photo would be much easier! I got the bass working but I want to check everything is as it should be.

When I had a Sei with a Schack in it, all I had was the diagram of what all the little dip switches in the control cavity did - no actual wiring diagram. I'm sure Martin can get hold of a copy of the actual wiring diagram, or, if all else fails, it might be worth asking Schack themselves.

As per my post, I got a wiring schematic from Martin but it isn't much help as it's difficult to relate it to what's actually going on in my cavity (oo-er missus). If I could see a photo of what goes where it'd be far easier for my non-technical and visually-orientated brain.

Can't get down to the Gallery until next month at the earliest unfortunately and I've got some recording ongoing in the meantime. I've got it working but I seem to have lost a lot of bass response so something's not right.

I'm probably setting myself up for a fall here as there are a lot of great players on here, but here is something I recorded the other day as I was trying to teach myself how to use Garageband.

Needless to say that I'm playing my Sei bass here!

Well after some dead ends, I finally managed to swap my ACG 9 string (which I was finding physically painful to play!) for a Sei fretless.

Kudos goes to the guy who I exchanged basses with. He sell one bass and part ex another with The Bass Gallery in order to get this bass to swap for my 9 string.

So here's the new addition to the sonic armoury!

Sei Flamboyant 6 string fretless

Spec:

Construction: Neck through
Neck: Maple/wenge
Body: Ash wings with walnut top
Fingerboard: Ebony. Unlined fretless with side dots with blue LEDS.
Pickups: Lightwave.
Controls: Volume, bass cut/boost, mid, mid cut-boost, ice tone (I think!)

It plays effortlessly and has a large array of sounds. The bottom end is like a big pillow! Just a beautiful instrument which I'm extremely proud to own.

Was that the 35" scale? I think a few TBers recommended that you didn't do that on such a wide neck, LOL!

Two weeks ago my new Sei Flamboyant arrived.
I wanted to get to know it for some time at first and then tell you my opinion.
It turned out very nice with a fast neck and moderate weight.
The 18mm stringspacing works for me for fingerstyle and slap without problems.
The lower strings have a very full and defined sound down to the low B.
What else could I wish for?
The only week point was the contact over The Gallery.
To get pictures and some response I first had to call Martin Petersen via the phone. That´s no big deal but they also forgot to send the second security lock with the bass and I am waiting for two weeks now after I wrote them...
Well I guess I have to call Martin again and cross my fingers this time.
