Sei Owner's Club (Part 3)

Spot on, those are exactly the woods used. Pictures here after being fretted by a local luthier. Plays beautifully now with an action that I'd never have dreamed of! WARNING ... well maybe: Before the fretting work began, the luthier noticed a split between the one of the Wenge / Bubinga neck stripes. His opinion was that this was not caused by an impact but looked like it was drying out! In any case he filled the split with some adheseive and assures me it'll stay good for the future.

No I don't think so. I recall it being a Bartolini circuit. Bass, para-Mid and Treble. As I am becoming acquainted again, I haven't messed too much with the tone controls, just cut the mids slightly. That is useful because now the EQ on my Markbass combo, set for a passive Fender Jazz, works fine for the Sei as well. View attachment 1055649

I'm a happy guy :)

That is a lovely looking bass and great that is being played again. I own #65 which I bought from The Gallery in 2001. It has Bartolinis with a Shack pre amp.

Yes Martin is still making killer basses. He builds low volumes though, I reckon there is not that much time for doing custom basses as he also has the work from his repair shop and the shop itself (The Bass Gallery). You need a fair bit of patience as lead times for a custom built tend to be long. Best to contact him though for details.

A fair range of s/h stock when I was in last including my own Sei #65 pictured a couple of posts above which sold very recently.

Can anybody help with pricing please? I've seen a lot of used SEI basses on line and on the forums. One in particular, the SEI Flamboyant sells used for about £2,000. I know they are custom, but does anybody have a rough idea of what a brand new Sei Flamboyant would cost today? Loosely, spec would be 5 string, amboyna spalted face, wenge/walnut/maple neck?, headless, Bartolini twin soap bar pick ups, Schack electronics, high gloss finish. I know there is a long lead time which doesn't bother me, and was wondering whether the used basses are more expensive as a result. I know I could ask Martin/John but don't want to waste anybody's time. Thanks for your help SEI Flamboyant.jpg

Roughly £3,500 or so, based on the last price list I saw (it might have gone up a bit since, and it's also likely to go up after January, as any parts they might need to import from the EU will become more expensive - ABM hardware, the Schack circuit, stuff like that). Best to ask the guys at The Gallery directly though.

How can I obtain a Sei bass?
Go to The Bass Gallery | London - click on "contact" and give them a call, or write them a nice email about how you'd love a Sei.

Take a look at the ones that are on the site too - there's currently 20 Seis on there, most of which are sold, but they'll give you some ideas for woods, pickup configs and so on.

Thank you. Do they deliver to the US? I have been looking but it doesn’t seem they get new often. Thank you

Yes, they'll deliver to the US. The ones you see on the site are generally used ones that they receive back, usually in part-exchange for something else. If you want a new one, they'll build it to order for you. Current waiting time, last time I heard, was about 18 months (might be longer now thanks to the pandemic), but speak to them about it.

Yes - it is a long wait ... but they are a really small operation but the quality is high.
I spoke with Martin earlier this week - since the shop is quiet, thanks to COVID, wait times are currently about 12 months, as he has more time to work on them since he's doing less shop stuff.

I'm about to order a pair of Original-shape twins... watch this space. :D

Resurrecting an old thread. Just got my Sei Jazz back after 7 years. Olive Wood top, Swamp ash body. Brazilian rosewood board, Birdseye maple neck and headstock. Bartolini's. East Preamp. AMB Bridge with rollers, from 16.5 to 18 mm. Very light. Its just stunning to play. Sounds incredible. Yeah - very into this J every time I see these pics. Yum!

Greetings - I just pulled the trigger on a SEI Flamboyant that was built for a bassist in the UK that had to sell her because of the dreaded taxman. It will arrive Thursday. Been looking forward to a SEI Flamboyant for years. First order of business after a proper setup with be contrast and comparison sessions with my other UK basses. A WAL Geddy MK2, an Enfield Cannon Custom, a Status Jazz, and of course the Flamboyant. Take care - Wal
