I think my idea of having no tone and volume contro has worked really well and I do not miss the controls at all. I also love the much cleaner look that I have with it. I do have a coil tap switch to give me a single coil or humbucker option which is hidden by the jack socket.

I have to confess that it is your 7-string that made me choose Martin to make my bass. It's one of the most stunning I've seen... You should get a commission!

Both of those 7-strings are wonderful...
I'd have to have at least a volume control as I actually use this while I'm playing but any other controls are generally set-and-forget for me. Makes me toy with the idea of having all the others as mini pots accessible from inside the control cavity only....>?

Juan-king it would be a dream to get an endorsement or commission but I suspect Martin does not need to do such things. For me it is just a real pleasure to let others see Martins work which are totally beautiful art and at the same time ultimate gigging/studio basses.
Big Red, my thinking behind no controls was very simple, I do not vary my tone controls once set I prefer to use my fingers, and as for the volume, I always turn it on full and adjust at the amp for the stage volume. So really I could do without anything.
For me the real eye opener was the Kent Armstrong humbucker. I described the sound I was trying to achieve to Martin and he relayed it to Aaron who wound the pickup. Aaron got it spot on and I have not even considered a pre, either inboard, the bass does have the cavity if needs be, or outboard.
Btw BigRedX the facing is flame sycamore, I think the same as you are having. Although the pics do not show it, the flame is outstanding and goes from the body right through the fretboard to the headstock. Martin and I tried to get a one piece flame bass and when seen in real life it really works.

Congrats on your bass - it looks lovely - I think I saw it in the flesh so to speak and it looks even better in person - she's a honey! - but I'm just checking out the recording and aside from the great playing on your part, the bass sounds awesome. I do a lot of groove playing - though some may only think of me a solo type - and the Sei has that gorgeous rounded tone that I simply don't get with my Warwick or my fretless (the latter has a beautiful tone, but it's not perfect for funk) so hearing this track has just given me even more confidence in my choice of bass - the tone you've got there is stunning - I'm sure you are chuffed to bits - I'm guessing it's bringing out new stuff in yuour playing too? There's no substitute for practice - but when you can play there's no substitute for the best gear!
Really pleased for you man - nice one.
I spoke to John in the shop yesterday and he said my bass 'won't be long' - which I know still means a few months - but that's cool.

Thanks for the comments dude! Very nice. I did that track in one take. The producer was well chuffed, and commented on the lovely musical midrange... The thing plays itself, with no effort. So different to the lakland, which sounded duff when recorded. but anyways I m really chuffed.

The bass sound fabulous!!! I am REALLY impressed (and I am having my 8th Sei bass made right now!!). Your instrument realy cuts through in the mix - wonderful.

Just listened right through the track and the tone is fantastic, even through computer speakers!
The bass just jumps out and grabs you and your playing is excellent.

I was amazed, I ust plugged straight into my sounbdcard (Tascam fw1082) and the bass sat really nice, no eq or anything just straight in. The thing is really inspiring to play, you just know its goona turn out right! The midrange is really nice, just cuts as you say. Very powerful preamp! WOW!

Huge congrats to Melt and Mistahbenn on their Seis. I hope you're as delighted with your as I am with mine
Gig last night, the bass was just amazing to be with. Played like it was part of my body. Outstanding. We had to play quietly because of where we played, but the bass still juts sounded so full and punchy even at low volumes. And when I dug in, it responded beautifully. Effortless to play, just felt like I'd beeen playing it years! And my technique has suddenly got a load better overnight, just because of the instrument.
BTW the remis you may have heard has had a lot of good feedback from the likes of Bugz in the Attic, and Giles Peterson. Harry may be doing a remix of Too Young To Die from Jay Kay. And he wants the Sei on it....

Wicked news all round - loving the sound of your gig experience Mr B - I just tried to send you a friend request on Myspace but the site was being crap - I actually hate myspace! - anyway....
I have an idea....that concerns all of us Sei bass types...
How about - when we all have our basses completed - that we meet up for a big Sei Bass fest!?
I have no idea where or when would be ideal - and I know some of you guys are in far flung places like Scotchland but it'd be great to have at least 15 or 20 Sei basses in one place - we can compare and contrast our different styles, sounds and designs etc... plus get to hang out a bit and maybe drink some beer... or orange juice or whatever.
One of the best places we could meet would be The Joint rehearsal rooms in Kings Cross - it's a pretty top notch rehearsal complex used by a lot of top pro bands here in London - you can hire amps and if we got one of the biggest rooms we could get at least 20 people in there - plus we could run the basses through a fat PA system and really hear the Sei sound big and loud...it could be a lot of fun.
It's all a way off yet but I think it would be great and I'm sure we could persuade Martin to stick a few pics of our ugly mugs on the gallery website - of the Sei Army! I think it'd be ace.
Let me know your thoughts on this hair-brained scheme.
