Having been lurking around this thread for some time can I now add my name to those with on-going Sei builds?

Saw Martin for the second time on Thursday and finally got to pay my deposit so my build is at last off the ground.

It's going to be a Flamboyant Offset fretless 5 string E-C with extended upper range access. Flamed Sycamore full front and back facing, Bubinga wings, Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard, Flamed Maple/Bubinga neck. LEDs on the side of the neck and very descrete dots on the fingerboard. Extended access will give me 28-30 'frets' depending on the final position of the neck pup. Electronics provisionally John East filter pre-amp and Bartolini humbuckers of some sort, but I still have time to mull those over...

Martin's been absolutely brilliant with bringing all my ideas into a workable form and one that will play, sound and look brilliant...

BigRedX, very warm welcome to the Sei club. Plenty of very dedicated Sei fanatics here! Your new bass sounds very interesting, especially the use of a high C rather than the more common low B. Really nice choice of woods as well!

Mistahbenn, party party party for you on Monday. Congrats and make sure you tell us all about it.

Melt, was the Thuya bass you saw a fretted 5 with a walnut body (Howie's bass) or was it a larger fretless bass with an alder body (the SEI 8)?

Thank you all...

This is my 3rd custom build - I already have a Gus guitar and fretted 5-string bass and Fret-King Esprit V custom guitar, but it's the first time that pretty much every aspect of the build has been open to choice. There were certain aspects of the design where I knew exactly what I wanted, and Martin was able to guide me through the others which I hadn't really thought about. I knew very much how I want the final instrument to look, sound and play, and Martin has supplied the knowledge to be able to get to get all those things into a workable instrument.

I'll keep everyone here up to date with the progress of the build, but as you know it'll be a while before there's any real news now. I have some photos of the woods for the facings and fingerboard I can post if anyone's interested?

While I was discussing mine I saw some wonderful basses nearing completion? including two fretless instruments - one with an incredibly wide neck and a second with short fret lines either side of the fingerboard which looks as though it has a body shape similar to what I want from mine.

A very warm welcome - your officially a waiter so I'll pm you a membership number and yes - loads of pics and progress reports please.

The fretless with short fretlines will be mine - flam 5 offset. I got to get up there this week to give it the ok before it goes to finishing school. How's it look? :hyper:

Welcome to the waiters club, from the specs you have listed it sounds as if it will be a very tasty Sei.

Please post any photos of your bass or wood as I for one would love to see them.

Your bass looked great - from my point of view it confirmed that I'd made the right decission as regards the body shape. Looking forward to seeing your when it's back from the finishers.

Anyway as requested here's some pics of the woods I've chosen:

Flamed Sycamore - it's going to be full facings front and back.

Brazilian Rosewood for the fingerboard. Unfortunately this pic doesn't do the wood justice at all, the strength of the colours is so much deeper in reality.

Ta for all the nice comments re the woods...

The bass will be finished when it's finished - I'm happy to wait until it's right. You know with Martin that it all takes time, but if you want a bass quicker there's other makers, or you could buy something "off the rack" (having said that while I was at the Gallery I played two very tasty basses - a Dingwall 5 with a chambered body and the Ibanez Gary Willis Signature which I did consider buying...)

With my previous custom builds the 2 guitars were fairly quick - about 12 weeks, but the Gus 5-string bass took almost a year, as I wanted it all black (including the metal work) and Simon was unsatisfied with the standard of some of thew finishing. The end result was completely worth the long wait, and I think with the Sei it will be even more so.

I just noticed a 7 string Sei on the website that has no volume or tone controls, I've not seen it before.

I'm seriously considering this route with my new 6 string.

I may just chicken out and have a bypass switch fitted so I can use it in passive mode, but I'm seriously considering nothing at all.

Yeah! Very nice indeed. Great feel, lovely neck, the action is a tad low, but will sort that out. The finish is fine, just what I expected. The electonics are extremely powerful! really nice to have the option for changing the eq on the Shack, plenty of experimentation to be had. Im glad I had the coil tap option, with the kents, I can get a real Smith type sound, just what I as after.

Also sounds really good recorded, much better signal than the Lakland. The real test will be gig on Friday. Time to unleash the beast, although Im trying to tame it right now!!

Its really true, good things come to those who wait. 10 years is a long time ... Im in love!

Very nice Mistahbenn!

Love the colour of the woods - what's the facing and wings?

When I see basses like this I have to be calm and remain patient about my build which is only just starting.

Judging by what I saw at the Gallery last week there should be a few more completed basses to see over the next month or so...
