With regards to the passive/active question, I have to say that I have never really used tone controls on a bass, that's why I've only opted for the volume control on my Sei. I have the Fender Urge which has 3 pickups and is active/passive but I just seem to find a tone and leave it.

By the way Dave, how did you get your sign-in name. We have a suspicion there could be a Simpsons reference ??!!

so im not alone, i really did go from one camp to the other though, i thought i would never want a passive bass ever, but i guess with the right pickups on the right bass a preamp isnt really needed, but i seriously used to constantly tweak my pre, and the thing is i was never happy with what i was hearing, but now that im running in passive i am, go figure, different courses i guess, sorry to derail anyways


so whos we?!?!?

well what can i say, i was watching the simpsons while playing my fretless bass... :p

I'm lookin forward to having the one pickup and volume control. I just have lots of controls on the other basses I don't use !! My Yamaha has a 3 band eq which is permenately set flat !!

I'm going to talk to Martin about the pickup when I'm down there next. I play on the pickup so the placing of it is quite crucial for me. I'll take 2 of my basses down with me as well so he can get an idea of sound and translate this into language that Mr. Armstrong can understand !!

I tend to read Talkbass on my laptop at the end of the day and my girlfriend reads her book next to me. When she saw your sign-in name she thought of Sideshow-Bob and asked me to ask you !!

Well, if you play on the pickup I would suggest you'd get a ramp, esp. if you're only going for one pickup. Pickup placement is very important for the sound, so comfort shouldn't count in this decision. Place it where you need to place it for the desired tone and get a ramp for comfort, it's the same.

About the active/passive switch, if it is wired so that on passive mode it completely bypasses the preamp and runs without batteries, it could be a lifesaver in the rare occasion that the battery failed and you didn't have a spare... one less thing to worry about.

yeah a ramp would be a good idea to solve that dilemma, and that way you can just worry about where the pickup is for the best tone.

well to be blatantly honest i have no idea where that name actually came from, i was sitting around trying to think of a name and it was the first thing that came to mind, the simpsons might of been on, im not really sure to be honest.

I presume that at this time of day, Paddy must be near to or in The Gallery! So pictures of 7strings Sei must be available soon :hyper:

Fretless Bob, my fretless is totally active and I think I would keep it that way. However, my fretted 7 is straight to jack with no control knobs, not even volume so that is passive in a very pure form and has a wonderful tone. I have also had to learn how to use my fingers to get differences in tone which has been a great learning experience.:bassist:

Re the new pickups I think I have found close to my tone. Pickup pan towards the neck [70%]
Treble flat 50% boost on the bass and 70-80% boost on the mids.
I will use this setting for a week or so to see how it works out as it gives me a full rich tone but not overpowering. I am playing tomorrow so I will see how it works out. I anticipate that I will end up rollong off the bass and mids a bit from where they currently are but we shall see. Small steps!

Looking out for photo's with anticipation :D

nice sounding bass, i thought you would like the purpleheart, and nice call on the Mahogany and the fatsacks as well, this bass is gonna be killer, you know what would be cool is Purpleheart lines... :D

what scale length did you go for, 34"?

Sounds like a great bass, Paddy. That's birdseye maple is killer !! I agree with Dave about the purpleheart lines..

Kittens have been had !! Here's one of the pics which Paddy took for me today (Cheers, mate, I owe you one !!). The rest are in my build thread !!

hmmm - not so sure about the purpleheart lines. Don't forget the purpleheart will only be visible from the back of the bass.

The lines are going to be very important for me. I want something that's going to stand out in low light (no I don't want LEds :D). I also don't want lines going the whole width of the fingerboard. Got a couple of ideas buzzing around at the moment - but I don't need to worry too much about it for a few months :bassist:

Hi and welcome to TB. Not a bad way to introduce yourself with that georgeous headless 5er :hyper: It is stunning.

I think that you should give us the full specs on that beast and what it sounds like in action and also the run down on you new one! Its not fair to say yo have one and are getting another without sharing all the details with us.:bassist:

I won't steal your thunder, so you can let the people on this thread know what it is you're having made.. ;) !!

I'm off to London tomorrow (well later today as it's that late already..). I'm going to see my bass next Wednesday and I'll post an update and more pics when I get back :hyper: !!
