Double Bass Sekova 60s? EUB

Hello all, I am new to TB and I am wondering if anyone could shed some light on this somewhat oddball bass I have had for a few years. For the life of me I can't even find a photo of another one online. I'm hoping that someone here may have some info on this one. I am a guitar player who dabbles with the bass and I'm thinking about fixing this one up. The pickups work and it actually sounds pretty nice even with the old strings. I need a new bridge and a set of tuners and new strings and should be on my way. Perhaps someone could point me in the right direction to a good source for parts also. Thank you in advance for any help!

Sekova was an import brand, MIJ. First one of these I've ever seen. Cool find.

The bridge looks like a standard DB bridge (a side shot would help to see how tall it is) and the tuners are cheapo BG tuners common to MIJ basses of the mid 60s. I'd seek out a local DB repairman to get his opinion on the bridge.

I actually do repairs and build guitars so I can most likely handle working on this beast. I was really wanting some advise on a good source for reasonably priced parts and also would love to know more about this particular instrument. In all of my research I've only found a couple of mentions about these. There is an old thread about one of these on this forum but the pictures have been removed. From that I can safely assume at least a few were manufactured but alas I want to know more… I've even posted these pics on a Japanese guitar page on FB and had no luck so far.

Many years ago I took one in on trade. There are some differences between yours and that one. The black board that the peg is attached to is probably an add on. The pickup is different.

The last Sekova catalog I've seen was 1973. I've never seen the EUB listed anywhere.

The instrument itself was a good player. Then neck was a tad on the thick side. The electric tone was usable in a modern context.

I've owned several EUB's and I'm kinda done with them but that thing is pretty cool.

Gollihur is a good place to start for parts. Great guys, fair prices.

You can pick up a set of used strings no problem here on TB.

DB strings are expensive and since you never really know how a particular set will behave on any particular bass people are always rolling the dice and trying different sets. Spirocore Weichs (light) or Spirocore Mittels (medium) would be a safe bet for you but anything with a steel core will work. If you like really light strings solo gauge sets are intended to be tuned up a whole step to F# but tuned down to E are gonna be like playing .009's on a Martin.

Those are bass guitar tuners. Again there's used stuff available in the classifieds here. I have a brand new set of stock Fender heads that came off my '63 RI a couple of years ago when I put on some lighter Gotohs. Yours for the cost of the shipping from Canada if you want 'em.

I had a Sekova electric bass, clone of of a Hofner Beatle bass, back around 1974. I'm not 100% positive but I would swear it was MIK, not MIJ. Then again, that was a long time ago, the memory ain't what it used to be...
